  1. Let’s make iftar 🌙 I made this Yemeni lamb mandi for the first time last Ramadan and it completely stayed with me. A whole leg of lamb, deeply infused with ghee, garlic and saffron, slow roasted until it fell apart. The rice cooked underneath in all those rich juices, fluffy, fragrant, exactly how basmati should be. Turkish lentil soup, caramelised onions (because we run a no-waste kitchen here), crisp fattoush, homemade samosas from the freezer, dates filled with nuts and chocolate, and finally… cheesy kunafa made with mozzarella and my own clarified butter. Halfway through dessert, my husband requested the Egyptian creamy version so I suppose that’s coming next. The leg of lamb was kindly gifted by @hillfarmfinest and it was the best I’ve ever had.   2. 💜💛💚💛💜 Do you see today as being the first day of spring (meteorological) or do you wait until 20th March? (astronomical) I laugh at myself about this question because it appears when it’s spring and summer I opt for the meteorological dates, but when autumn and winter arrive I tend to opt for the astronomical dates.   3. 🩷💛💚💛🩷 Phlox Drummondii Grandiflora ‘Cherry Caramel’ ……… I love this variety of annual phlox, I think it has a vintage feel, which goes really well with the cottage garden style. I loved them planted in this old tin bath, they made the perfect couple. Annual phlox seeds are best sown between February and April indoors. You can direct sow them in May, but I’ve never tried that method. These seeds don’t like light to germinate. It seems wrong the first time you sow them, but they need to be covered with a dark lid or black bin liner. I check mine daily and as soon as they’ve germinated, I then place them in the light. I’ve always found that they need some support due to their long branching wiry stems, they grow to around 45/50cm tall. It’s a good idea to pinch them out when they’re young to promote busier plants. They flower all summer and are good for cutting, but I like to enjoy them in the garden. ☺️ Are you planning on growing any phlox from seed this year?   1. Back in the Luberon garden evening light begins to fall over the umbrella pine There has been a lot of spring rain this year and it is still not over. This is in direct contrast to the last two years which were exceptionally dry. And the difference is palpable with the plants growing exponentially The irises, many of which had begun to fail, are now back in their original numbers and have been flowering for weeks. New, lush growth is everywhere with jungly undergrowth blocking paths and blurring previously sharp lines. Our well is full again and the water in the underground aquifers which feed the roots of the trees and shrubs is returning to reassuring levels. The winter form of the beautiful, richly-scented, shell-pink damask rose, ‘Ispahan’ Six individual plants stand like sentinels along the upper herbaceous border, each tied onto simple frames to form ghostly echoes of columns of deep-green Irish yews with which they alternate This style of basket-weave pruning was taught to me by a gardener at Sissinghurst when I was at a loss as to how to manage the speedy growth and very long stems of this magnificent rose. It creates a very elegant form and means the plant flowers all over its surface while the interior is hollow and aerated Earlier supports made of hazel posts either rotted off in the damp winters or were blown over in high winds. I finally resorted to rebars (intended for reinforcing concrete) and they have done a brilliant job, staying firmly rooted. This is a stress busting way to spend some time doing something crafty, making ‘leather’ paper using the Japanese momigami technique of kneading paper until it turns as soft as fabric. Use pretty patterned paper to make beautifully soft wrapping paper or journal covers, I make this leather paper to cover books mainly but I’ve also used it to wrap ‘masculine’ gifts and as collage paper. I remember at school we always used to cover our notebooks; wallpaper, sticky back plastic or freestyle collage, in my case that usually meant pictures of horses or Donny Osmond which used to annoy my best friend who was a staunch David Cassidy fan.   2. ….. fabric collage. This ‘Suffolk Autumn’ scroll was going to be a wall hanging but it turned into a scroll for no other reason than I like scrolls, there’s something about the feel of them I find very reassuring and comforting. The front is machine and hand stitched, the magpies are attached with fusible web and the sides are bound with a very rustic whip stitch using linen lace thread. The substrate is canvas and the back is linen with sashiko stitching (stitched using a Baby Lock ‘Sashiko’ sewing machine). Cheating? Maybe, but saves so much time when time is short and is much kinder to arthritic fingers on larger pieces like this.   3. …. playing with colour I had such fun making this little fabric scroll book. One side is the ordered colours of the seasons, the other is totally random, made with scraps picked out of my scrap box willy nilly and hand stitched on as they came out, no fiddling or changing them over for something I liked better. Creativity is all about play, something we tend to forget to do as we get older, which is such a shame as it’s so good for the soul and very much needed at the moment.   3. It was the final week for the kitchen garden renovation 🥰 Herbs, veggies 🍆 and a starter amount of autumnal cut flowers have all been planted into their new beds. Three large compost bins have been added to the orchard made from sleepers we’ve had in store for this very moment !!   1. Sharing this feels strange. Partly because we have just stepped into such a happy chapter of life. Our dream cottage. New plans. New memories waiting to be made. Partly because eight years later, I never imagined I would be saying these words again. But I have always shared the good and the hard on here and this is part of our story too. Thank you to every friend and family member who has already wrapped us up in support, messages, phone calls, tears, kindness, practical help and love. You have carried us more than you will ever know. To everyone who has sat with me in the shock, listened when there were no words, checked in, sent messages or simply reminded us we are not facing this alone, thank you. Today I had a CT scan and with those results we make a plan. I did this once before and I will do it again. One day. One step. One positive at a time.   2. Sometimes life doesn’t wait for one chapter to finish before starting the next. Over the past nine months we’ve sold a house, bought our dream cottage, moved our entire lives, and received a breast cancer diagnosis that none of us were expecting. It’s been joyful, exhausting, exciting, terrifying and everything in between. For those who are new here, this is a little catch up on how we got to this point. Eight years ago, during my first breast cancer journey, I shared one positive every day. It helped me focus on the good, even when life felt incredibly difficult. So I’ve brought that practice back. Not because everything is positive. Far from it. But because even on the hardest days, there is usually something worth holding onto.   3. Here’s Linds. March 2018. She had cancer but she didn’t know it yet. On April 6th my world changed. A 5.5cm fast growing breast cancer. Surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy became the plan to keep me alive and hopefully stop it from coming back. Treatment broke me in ways I didn’t think possible. But it also rebuilt me. Stronger, braver and far more aware of how precious life really is. Since then I have walked catwalks, run marathons, moved to a new country, changed my career and gone to university at 49 and somehow came out the other side with a first class degree. I also started this account, which has become such an integral part of who I am today and a space that has brought so much connection and joy into my life. I have become a Nana to the most beautiful little girl. Celebrated 30 years of marriage to Mr C. And lived a million ordinary moments that now feel anything but ordinary. But if I am honest, the fear never fully leaves. The odd pain, the quiet what ifs. Life after cancer is not the same. And I don’t want it to be. Because facing your mortality sharpens your desire to live. Today marks 8 years since my diagnosis. I am deeply grateful to still be here, and always mindful of the incredible women who didn’t get the chance to see what came next. Hold your people close 🤍

  1. For me, RHS Chelsea is all about inspiration and learning from the best, but I do love to spot ideas which I might be able to use in my own 12x5m courtyard garden. This year’s show had so many small space garden takeaways. From painted filing cabinet planters in the @seasaltcornwall Painted Garden by Lynn James to the mini corten steel herb planter and containerised crab apple trees in the @alzheimerssoc balcony garden, lightbulb moments were everywhere. The commercial stands are often a mine of ideas. This year, I loved looking at @alitex_ and @odd_limited. @birdiefortescue is amazing, as is Architectural Antiques. In the Grand Pavilion, the plant nurseries are a fund of planting brilliance and colour combinations. Too many to list individually but @harespringcottageplants was spellbinding, as well as @middletonnurseries and @sparsholt_coll for their superb natural dye garden called Washday Hues. Special mention to @flowersfromthefarm for their lovely ideas, too (the dual purpose upcycled table and insect habitat). And the auricula theatre from Summerdale Nurseries. I hope you enjoy my impressions and maybe find a few features for your own gardens here. Remember, you can still find affordable vintage pieces at car boot sales and on Facebook marketplace.   2. A wonderful day at #RHSChelsea, spotting trends and predictions which will filter their way from fantasy to reality in our own gardens. It was a strong year, with some of the prettiest plantings I’ve seen for a while. From delicate filigree plant shapes and subtle colours in the Lady Garden Foundation ‘Silent No More’ by Darren Hawkins, highlighting five gynaecological cancers, to the sunny mix of edibles and decorative plants in The Eden Project Bring Me Sunshine garden, there was a lighter touch. And a sprinkle of magic - the Mother Nature carving in the @cpre ‘On the Edge’ garden gave me goosebumps. Loads of ideas for small gardens in the balcony area where new designers showcase their talents. I marvelled at Hedgerow in the Sky by Sarah Mayfield and Monika Greenhough - and the bijoux Alzheimer’s Society Microbes and Mind Garden by Tina Warboys. Sanctuaries to step into, cosy cabins and rustic shelters for painting, reading and pottering were a constant theme. Therapeutic growing, whether its plants for dyes or natural medicines came up a lot. And of course there are charitable causes, education and campaigning at the heart of the show. The celeb count was high, everything is dusted with a dazzling layer of glamour on press day (even if there were a few coats and scarves over the amazing dresses and suits to beat the chill!). I’ll leave that coverage to the influencers who do it so much better than I can. I forgot to take even take one selfie, I was so engrossed!   3. 🌿 In Fiona’s Stamford container garden @fionacumberpatch (swipe through to see before 120 plant pots transformed the space!): “Downsizing from a village house to a small Edwardian terrace in the middle of a town, we traded a generous, leafy plot for a tiny, paved 12m x 5m overlooked courtyard. I planned to dig up the slabs and make an urban cottage-style garden filled with flowers and wildlife. But after adding a kitchen extension with bifold doors, our builder broke some bad news: there was no soil under our yard, only layers of rubble and concrete, far too expensive to remove. I knew I had to make a view somehow, so I’ve created a garden using only containers (120 of them!). We removed some slabs and laid a curved reclaimed brick path to break up the boxiness. Small trees and shrubs in pots added some height and privacy, with ornamental grasses making a living screen against a low wall. I gained the sense of immersion that I craved within two years. In summer, I love sitting outside the mini greenhouse with a cup of tea and my paints. Looking up, I see Tumbling Toms ripening alongside pink pelargoniums in a wall planter. Wigwams of home-grown cosmos, zinnias, thunbergia, honeysuckle and plumbago surround me. Bees are buzzing and various butterflies flit past. It’s my escape, my haven, my solace - and I wouldn’t have it any other way.” #GMinyourgarden is our series peeking over the fence into gardens around the world to explore their places in our lives today.

  2. My award for longest flowering plant this Summer goes to Diascia Aurora Apricot 🥇 ~ and it’s a perennial! It’s been flowering since June! Its such a pretty little plant, a lovely compact twinspur in a beautiful peachy colour, a colour a lot of us like so much. I currently have it growing in a container on the patio where I can see it up close. I must visit @crocus.co.uk to see if they have more as it has performed better than the annuals and should return each year so I definitely need more!   3. Lysimachia ephemerum is a lovely summer flowering perennial which is elegant and graceful. It forms a clump of upright stems clad in narrow, grey narrow leaves topped with spires of starry white flowers. After the flowers it makes good seedheads of round brown capsules for winter interest. Like other loosestrifes it flourishes in moist conditions with a bit of shade. It doesn’t seem to be widely grown but it’s a favourite of mine. #lysimachiaephemerum #willowleavedloosestrife #willowloosestrife #lysimachia #whiteperennials
