  2. 10 things they didnt tell me about marriage before we got married 1. Conflict is inevitable: I didn’t know that the fact that you are female and I’m male was enough grounds to disagree on everything. Men and women are wired differently, with different brain chemistry, this distinction is a probable ground for violent arguments that can lead to unreconcilable differences. Age, family of origin, orientation, goals are differences on both sides. As such I wake up expecting conflict, with the knowledge that I’m ready to solve them. 2. Expectations bring trouble: they didn’t tell me that I wasn’t to expect too much from my partner. I realised that the relationship creates a “we” which is the most enjoyable thing in the world, knowing someone’s got your back. However, in that beautiful “we” feeling you can lose the “I”, I was not told that pair bonding might let me lose my individuality and cause me to unnecessarily expect she loses hers too. 3. Communication is the key but honesty is the door: people always told me communication is the key, but they never told I have to be honest 100 percent of the time if my marriage was going to work. They told me that trust is the wheel that turns the marriage foward, but they didn’t tell me that honesty was the mechanism that turns the trust wheel. 4. Expect change: one of my favourite hip life songs from wuta, is “oh my baby don’t change your style, oh my baby be like that”, this delusion of expecting your partner to be constant in a relationship, which is relative, I guess it’s the fear your partner could change into something that doesn’t benefit the “we”. Due to this, we manipulate, we coerce, and we unintentionally stifle the growth of our partners so they don’t change. and funny enough, when they don’t change, we criticize them for not being dynamic, forgetting the role we played in them being static. But even when we succeed, menopause and andropause, midlife crises, all change biology and psychology, then you both have to deal with it, the way I’m dealing with mine. Change is the only constant 5. Don’t get offended: they tell you how crucial forgiveness is, but forget to tell you have the capacity to decide not to get offended at all, rendering the forgiveness unnecessary. It is easier to consistently be aware of how your partner is making you feel than to be feeling offended enough to request an apology before forgiveness. People need to hear “I’m sorry” before they let things go, but if you let your partner apologize to you all the time one day they will up and leave. The legendary daddy Lumba PBUM, says it best in the song “yentie Obiara”, me ntie na ma te, men hw3 na me hu, to wits, I won’t listen to hear, and I won’t look to see. 6. you’ll disagree on leadership styles: the society didn’t tell me that not all marriages are the same. Some marriages work when the man leads and the wife leads, and vice versa, in my situation, my wife leads in areas where she has more competence than I do, and I do the same in areas I am competent in, as such, there is no boss, we are co equals. I wasn’t told this was a possibility, so it came as a cultural shock to me when I realized my wife wasn’t ready to let me lead her in all aspects of her life, this small thing can lead to serious conflicts associated with supposed insubordination. It’s even a plus if you cant lead you partner all the time, you can use that time to lead yourself. 7. you’ll have different love languages: they didn’t tell me that my needs wouldn’t always meet her, they promised that once we love ourselves we’d become one🤣🤣in soul and in spirit. The false compatibility agreement that we both come to in the early romantic stages of the relationship will carry on to the end as long as you both mean well, they didn’t tell me this wasn’t true. Even my love language has changed from constant affirmation to do you bro🤣as long as you are happy I am happy. My wife’s love language is gift giving and acts of service, mine is physical touch
