We've been at my dad's house for the past month, which is a familiar place that she's been multiple times. She does not want to leave. I don't blame her. I also don't want to leave. But we're going to visit my nephew and then we're going to a writing retreat and then we go home. So she has to go with me. For newcomers, Elsie is very consistent about using LITTERBOX as a curse word. We actually see this across the button community that learners will choose whatever their word is for excrement as their curse word. I think of it as roughly equivalent to "this is some bullshit." For Instagram subscribers, I have a longer version of this conversation for you, which includes some things you can look for with your own Learners. Also for new folks. Here's a quick rundown... Elsie is 7 years old. S

Elsie will combine the word hairtie with other things like kibble. HAIRTIE KIBBLE is one of her favorite games. And it just means throw kibble. I wish that she fetched. I have thought about trying to teach her how to, because sometimes she will and it's random. But what we do instead is have a stack of hair ties and shoot them across the room in one direction. And then I move to that end of the room and throw them back. The friend I was on the phone with Minneapolis is exhausted but fine physically. Emotionally is a whole different situation because they know people who have been detained. Bite ICE. But Elsie really enjoyed her game of hairtie. It's one of the reasons I love buttons because it can clarify what she wants to play. That you know how sometimes your cat clearly wants to play an

Very occasionally, Elsie will trot out a English language grammar sentence. Now in this case, IS was a back foot press so it's possible it was unintentional. But I have seen her do this sort of construction before with just front paw. This is what I mean when I say that she doesn't speak English. Like I can make a grammatically correct French sentence. But most of the time when I'm attempting to communicate it is individual words and hoping that someone can pick it up from context. It's also why I don't care if what she's doing is language. It is communication. Elsie can and occasionally does make a English sentence. But most of the time she's able to communicate without having to do that. If I refused to acknowledge what she was trying to communicate because it didn't meet some weird thre

This is one of those places where if I just went on body language I would take that sweater right off of her. Because she definitely walks funny, but.... Her tail is up which is happiness for a cat. She asked for it. She can take it off by herself. And then she said THANK YOU, which is the sweetest thing. Now the important things. Yarn: Malabrigo wasted in Cereza Pattern: The poet dog sweater on ravelry I am going to stop putting the lower segment on though because I think she would like it better. Interestingly, the reason cats walk funny, when you put a harness on them is that their sense of proprioception comes a lot from their fur. Stuff touching their fur tells them that they're in a tight space. So when you get a sweater or harness on them they feel like they're being touched from al

The reason this is in black and white is that it is still dark outside. It's right around 7:00 a.m. and she is awake, I'm guessing because there are birds outside. Even though the voice on both Elsie and Guppy's board is my voice, they are in different places in the apartment so we can tell which board is active due to proximity of sound. Yesterday, was the first time she did this. We hoped it was a one-off and then it happened again this morning. I am really hoping it does not become a habit. And to be clear, the reason she has an automated feeder that goes off in the morning is that before buttons she would walk all over the bed and yell because she wanted people to be up. So don't look at this and think of it as a reason to not get buttons. As annoying as that is, it is still better tha

When I return after a trip I get one of three basic paths from Elsie. 1. An expression of feelings ie MAD 2. A recitation of everything she experienced while I was gone in a totally disjointed fashion that I barely understand. 3. Request for games or some other activity that she couldn't partake of while I was away. We are currently at my dad's house. The way the timing worked out for the book tour. It made more sense to come here than to go back to Denver, especially since that meant she didn't have to go to New York. But... my dad has a house cleaner who understandably needed to move Elsie's cat playground in order to do her job. So the evening that I got back, we spent a lot of time with her playing with her tube and paper. My best guess on why she said IS would be that she was kind of

The book is CHILDREN OF TIME by Adrian Tchaikovsky. Elsie doesn't have words for light and dark and uses MORNING and NIGHT as substitutes. I have thought about giving her light and dark, but so far we're okay with morning and night as synonyms. She has a lot of buttons and even though she's very smart, she can't read. So she just has to remember where they are. This is one of the reasons that I don't add new words constantly and why I try to look for umbrella words that can be used for more than one thing. Like when I got her the concrete paver, a lot of people suggested that I call it paver or concrete because that's what it was. Problem is that's a one use word. It can't really be applied to a lot of other things. So I try to find compound words from her existing vocabulary or using it t

She can just be brutal sometimes with her word choices. I know he sounds really annoyed, but my husband loves Elsie very much. They have a great relationship. I can see from the log and video that she had been very chatty and gotten several treats before this video starts. I make the joke about him not having had coffee in the video, but the truth is that all that's really happening here is he's setting a boundary. He had given her treats before this and that was enough. The puzzle is food. So there's a limit to how much she can have. She wasn't listening to the boundary which is why he had to switch to the buttons. This is like with a child. They can want what they want but that doesn't always mean that they get to have it. And as cold as that bye is, it is still better than her biting ou
