In just one day, I visited four really cool historic sites in Wisconsin: The shot tower at Tower Hill State Park processed raw lead and changed the entire economic development of this part of the state. A rock on the side of highway 136 seems like an unlikely National Historic Landmark, but Van Hise Rock is Quartzite monolith that was studied for important research by Charles Van Hise that would go on to form the entire basis of structural geology. Man Mound is the only effigy mound of its type left in North America, built sometime between the 8th and 13th centuries. In 1905, a road was built through the “legs” and destroyed 50 feet of the mound, but today, it’s a well-cared-for National Historic Landmark. The Yerkes Observatory in Wisconsin is known as “the birthplace of modern astrophysics,” and recently, the important landmark of science reopened to the public. The main attraction is the Great Refractor, the biggest refractor telescope in the world, which first debuted at the 1893 World’s Fair. The telescope’s 60 foot long tube seems even bigger in person. The Observatory itself was part of the University of Chicago, and some of recent history’s greatest scientists worked or studied here. The observatory was designed by Henry Ives Cobb in a Beaux Arts style, and the entire structure is going through a restoration.
