One of my personal working hypotheses is connected to astrotheology, which has long been a spiritual compass for me. I believe that rituals involving goat and ram skins may once have been connected to the great turning points of the year — the winter solstice, when the Sun enters Capricorn (the goat), and the awakening of spring, when the Sun enters Aries (the ram). Over centuries, calendars changed, religions changed, and dates shifted, but symbols often survive long after their original meanings are forgotten. I do not claim certainty. But sometimes, standing by the fire, watching figures clothed in skins move in a circle, I feel as if I am seeing echoes of those cosmic rhythms still alive on Earth. In the village of Ratevo, in the municipality of Berovo, North Macedonia, every year on St. John’s Day — January 20th according to the Julian/Orthodox calendar (There is no Catholic equivalent of this feast, which commemorates the Synaxis of St. John the Baptist associated with Theophany, the Baptism of Christ) — a ritual takes place that feels far older than any calendar that now names it. On the night before, through darkness, fire, and sound, the Bamburci awaken — a pagan rite that has survived centuries, perhaps far longer than memory can reach. Fire is lit, drums and zurna cut through the cold air, and masked figures dressed in sheep skins move through the village like echoes of another age. There is something powerful and unsettling in the atmosphere, as if the boundary between the p

This is the moment when the Kukeri leader, or Chaush, steps into his role — the most important day of his life, as they said. Dressing in animal skins and donning the mask marks his initiation as the leader for the entire ritual year. Once he steps outside, he ceases to be merely a man; he becomes a powerful figure, guiding hundreds of Kukeri and members of community through the procession. Though the movements are not ‘dance’ in the theatrical sense, they are highly ritualized, echoing the structured gestures of Boujloud in Morocco or other Balkan and Alpine traditions. This ceremony exists within a Christian framework, yet its participants maintain full awareness of its pagan roots, preserving an ancient continuity with the past. Crafted with immense patience by skilled monks using natural pigments and vanaspati ghee—a replacement for traditionally-used yak butter—the ephemeral butter sculptures are sacred offerings made for ceremonies across Himalayan Buddhist cultures. Once central to Bhutia households, where children learned ritual art in monasteries, butter sculpting in Sikkim is now fading. With fewer lamas and a turn away from monastic life, cardboard replicas replace sacred sculptures at Losar (Tibetan New Year). To foster cultural continuity, passing these traditions across generations and geographies thus becomes crucial. In our effort to uncover, safeguard, and celebrate India’s intangible cultural heritage, our rider-researchers documented this living tradition during the third edition of Royal Enfield x
