The first layer of any painting I do when using the indirect painting method is often referred to as "dead coloring" or the “ugly stage” - or as I call it - the stage where I’m trying to avoid putting in detailed information. This layer is really uncomfortable for most people when they are first learning to paint. It's a thinner layer (some solvents may be used depending on the pigments) where I've covering the whole surface and reconfirming general shapes and values, it's a very active drawing stage. This is not a "color by number" with my transfer. I never trust my transfer 100% I use @trekell_art_supplies long filbert hog bristles in order to ensure that I don't get lost in details and that I scrub a thin layer down without textual build up and keeping soft edges. We recently went to Japan, among all of the snacks and souvenirs, my fiancé came back with inspiration for collecting Hirono figures. I thought it would be cool to imagine them in a realistic scene to decorate her creative space like a little lifelike window into another world. I painted it on a limited edition @trekell_art_supplies altar panel that I gilt and antiqued. Such a perfect fit for The King! 👑 I used a TON of Trekell spectrum liners to paint the details, this painting pushed me to my limit in terms of size! When painting florals, especially vibrant (high chroma) flowers- it is a balancing act between higher or lower chroma and warmer or cooler hues. This balance is so important for the flower to have a life like quality similar to what you see in live flowers from life as the light dances and is scattered by the micro-texture of the pedal, which differs greatly from one type of flower or another. This was a alla prima demo that I painted for students. I am teaching a floral webinar this upcoming April 6th and 7th on a indirect approach to floral painting.
