Experience : That most brutal of teachers. But you learn, my God do you learn. Opening weekend has been a challenging one. The elk have been less than corporative and the temps are still hanging in the mid 80s. I’ve hiked around 28 miles in the last 4 days in various elevations only walking into a few small herds bedded in the thick timber. Not a peep from any of them. Not even the cows are talking amongst themselves. Yesterday on my hunt, things escalated rather quickly and I took a shot at a decent bear. I had full pass through and lots of blood at the scene and what looked like lung blood all over a area a few yards away. Then very good blood for a good distance making tracking the bear easy at first, then things just stopped… The terrain of course was steep and littered with thick grou
