What's a good fake follower rate on Instagram?

Fake follower rates climb with audience size. Bigger accounts attract more bot activity whether or not the creator bought followers, so a 20% rate means something very different on a 3K account than on a 2M one. This benchmark shows what's typical at each creator tier, so you can put the number in context. A high rate isn't an automatic no. Look at how many real followers remain and how well they match your target audience.

How we calculate the fake follower rate

Modash analyzes a sample of a creator's followers and sorts each account into one of five types: real people, mass followers, influencers, suspicious accounts, and bots. The fake follower rate is the combined share of the last two. Mass followers are counted separately — they are real people, but they follow tens of thousands of accounts, so they rarely deliver much for a campaign.

How to spot fake followers

Open a few of their followers. Fake accounts tend to have no profile image, a gibberish username, a missing bio, and few or no posts of real people.

Fake followers don't engage, so engagement often sits below what the follower count suggests. Around 1–3% is normal on Instagram. Repetitive generic comments are another tell.

Bought followers arrive all at once, a sharp spike followed by a flat stretch. Genuine accounts grow more steadily, even when a viral moment speeds things up.
