Add a splash of water or oil if needed to blend. Coat the chicken pieces well with this paste.   3. Depuis mon retour, plusieurs m’ont demandé pourquoi je porte souvent des hauts qui laissent voir mon “underboob”. La vérité, c’est que j’ai des cicatrices au niveau du torse suite à un grave accident de motoneige il y a 8 ans. Encore aujourd’hui, elles sont sensibles au soleil… ce qui fait que plusieurs types de maillots ne sont plus vraiment une option pour moi. La manière plus conventionnelle pour les filles de se sentir sexy, c’est d’avoir un décolleté, mais pour moi, ce n’est plus vraiment possible. Ma façon de me sentir bien, de me sentir femme, c’est simplement celle-là. Ce n’est pas pour attirer l’attention, c’est ce qui me permet de me sentir confortable dans mon corps, tel qu’il est aujourd’hui. Pendant longtemps, j’ai eu de la difficulté à accepter ces marques. Elles me rappellent un moment qui a changé beaucoup de choses pour moi. Mais avec le temps, j’ai appris à les voir autrement… comme une preuve de ce que j’ai traversé. Je comprends que ça puisse surprendre ou sembler différent, et c’est correct. On remarque tous ce qui sort de l’ordinaire… mais derrière ce qu’on voit, il y a parfois une histoire qu’on ne soupçonne pas. And if u have YOU HAVE TO TRY especially if you have a sweet tooth 🦷 1 cup (200g) azuki red beans ¾ to 1 cup (150–200g) sugar (adjust to taste) 1/8 tsp salt Simplified Steps: Rinse & Soak (Optional): Rinse azuki beans. Soaking is optional, but it can reduce cooking time. Boil & Drain: Add beans to a pot, cover with water, bring to boil, then discard the water. Cook Beans: Refill with fresh water, simmer for about 1–1.5 hours until soft. Add water as needed. Drain & Mash (for Koshi-an): Koshi-an (smooth paste): Mash beans and strain through a sieve with water to remove skins, then drain well. Tsubu-an (chunky paste): Skip straining; mash lightly or leave whole beans. Sweeten: Return beans/paste to pot, add sugar and salt, cook over medium heat until thickened.   1. Okay angels, time to talk about rejection. This spring, I received my second rejection from the Canada Council in the Research and Creation stream for my Depression Cooking manuscript. It hurt. After the first rejection I was determined to get the grant the second time around. I attended grant writing workshops, spoke with program officers, took all of the advice I could get, even paid a pal to edit the thing and give me feedback. And still a no. Despite knowing that rejection is a part of moving through the art world, that didn’t soften the sting. As artists we often share our successes on this app, but we rarely share our rejections. In case it resonates, I want to say, ‘hey I’m a reject too!’ If you have also been rejected, whether from a funding body, from an exhibition opportunity, a publishing opportunity, a residency or an award you can still do the thing. You can film the video, write the short story collection, or pursue the series of paintings. I wrote the manuscript and am now editing it. The opinions of two juries don’t really have much bearing on whether or not I’m going to do it. I’m doing it. Depression Cooking will become a book without the Canada Council. I’m going to need to hustle to pay my bills, but I am no stranger to hustle. Thanks to @sanaahumayun at @makingspace.yeg for the mug so I can openly spill the tea on the internet.   2. As an artist who writes and makes art about food I’m compelled to join in the coordinated boycott of Loblaws for the month of May. I don’t need to be an economist to know that the cost of my groceries have skyrocketed while my income has remained the same. Weekly grocery runs that cost me $50 in 2014 now cost me up to $150-$200. I know that many are unable to afford this increase. I don’t believe that food is a privilege. Food is a right. We all need food to survive. It feels impossible to talk about food without condemning the starvation being used as a tool of gen0cide in G@z@. Likewise I condemn the grocery CEOS in so-called Canada lining their pockets while every day people struggle to put food on the table. There is enough food for us all. It is only capitalism and the capitalists that benefit from this system that try to convince us otherwise. Do not eat their lies. The boycott of Starbucks has proven to us that boycotts work. I am reminded of this line from my student union days: there is strength in numbers. Please boycott with me. If you dont like a strong garlic flavour, I recommend using half the amount of garlic 🫶🏼 RECIPE: -19oz can fava beans -½ 19oz can chickpeas -1 cup water -1tsp kosher salt -1tsp cumin -4 cloves garlic, finely minced into a paste (use less if you don’t like a strong garlic flavour) -¼ cup olive oil, divided -2 lemons, juiced and divided -parsley and tomatoes for garnish For serving: -2 hardboiled eggs -1 pita -cucumber, cut lengthwise -cherry tomatoes or whole tomato (quartered) -radishes, quartered 1. Rinse and drain beans well. 2. Add beans, water, salt, and cumin to a small pot and bring to a boil 4. Lower heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes, mashing the beans as they soften 5. Remove from heat, stir in 2tbs evoo, juice of one lemon, and minced garlic 6. Add to bowl and drizzle with remaining evoo, and juice from one lemon. Garnish with chopped tomatoes and parsley. 7.
