  1. . 5 years ago today I lost something I loved.  It led me to something better.    5yrs ago today, after being locked out for over a year, I got officially evicted from my gym. No warning & no “Plan B”. Just another casualty of a global pandemic and a chapter of my life that closed overnight.    That old gym was a humble little space but it was everything to me. 900 sq ft hidden away in the back of an old hockey rink. No frills. Just iron, sweat, & an obsessive commitment to the work…and yet, somehow, in that tiny room something legendary was built. In 2009 I opened that little gym while I restarted my business & in many ways also my life. Over the years hundreds of elite professional athletes came through that space not because of how it looked, but because of what happened inside it. The workouts were legendary and although the aesthetics were rough the vibe was immaculate. It’s also where @biosteelsports was launched, built from nothing into a household name right there between the squat racks.    I’d be lying if I said losing it didn’t hurt. That gym was my second home (& in the early days sometimes my first one). I spent countless hours there. But sometimes the universe forces one door shut because you never would have walked through a new one on your own.     That disruption pushed me to find my new space & launch @paragenixsystems & I couldn’t be more proud of what we’ve built. A real system with a real team reflecting 3 decades at the highest level of this game. The new space & team have allowed us to finally operate at the scale this work has always deserved and our program offerings have taken off in ways never possible in that 900ft² room.    Adversity rarely looks like an opportunity in the moment but it almost always is… IF you choose for it to be so.    For a long time I looked back through a painful lens but now I look back only with gratitude & pride.     Thank you to everyone who was part of the first chapter & a special thank you to our amazing Paragenix Team writing the new one every day - especially @mike_carneiro74 & @toronto_pete Day 1 crew still going strong 17yrs later 👊🏻

  2. . Last week I was as in Buffalo for the NHL combine. Every year, 18-year-olds enter the NHL draft process - scouted, scored, weighed, measured, and interviewed by teams looking for any edge in evaluating their potential. The NHL Scouting Combine puts the top prospects through a battery of physical fitness tests and a gauntlet of team interviews, the results of which can shape their entire future. For those young players involved it is equal parts exciting and anxiety inducing. Yesterday morning, while standing in my gym watching two athletes I’ve known since they were teenagers, I was reminded of exactly why this matters. The NHL combine has come a long way since the first year I attended almost 25 years ago. The NHL has done a great job of trying to make the tests more specific and relevant and the process does provide teams with some insights they might not otherwise have had regarding where these players are at…but what those numbers can’t tell you is who they could become. Tom Wilson at 18 was 6’3”, 204 lbs. Still a big kid by anyone’s standard but far from the 6’4”, 230 lbs specimen he is today. Mason Marchment at 18 wasn’t even playing Major Junior hockey and was 6’3”, 185lbs. Not on anyone’s radar. Not invited to the Combine. Went undrafted entirely. He’s now 6’5”, 215 lbs. Two inches taller and 25 lbs heavier and in the middle of a great NHL career. The body had other plans. Physical development takes time. Years of consistent work in the gym and a genuine commitment to nutrition can compound quietly in the background if you let them. Of course, it also helps when nature decides to show up to the party. Be very careful about putting a final stamp on an 18-year-old athlete. Especially when we are talking about physical qualities. The body has a long runway, and development is never a straight line. Just some good for thought…

  3. ⁣ I’m incredibly proud to announce the opening of the Ottawa Senators’ new state-of-the-art medical and high-performance facility. This project wouldn’t have been possible without the vision and support of our owner, Michael Andlauer, and president, Steve Staios. Their dedication to creating a best-in-class space for our athletes is truly inspiring. A special shout-out to our Senior VP of Hockey Operations, Dave Poulin, who was the de facto project manager and my personal psychotherapist every time a construction deadline was approaching!⁣ ⁣ While we’re excited to showcase the latest in strength equipment and sports science technology, the real strength of our team is the people who bring the space to life and the beauty of this facility lies in its ability to foster collaboration between those people. ⁣ It was designed to maximize integration between our medical and strength & conditioning staffs, ensuring that all aspects of athlete care are aligned to enhance performance.⁣ ⁣ Functionality is at the heart of what we do here—every inch of the space is tailored for real athletic training, with a focus on developing speed and power. ⁣ We also made sure that the facility’s design included strong branding and a connection to the city of Ottawa, reflecting the pride we have in this team and its vibrant community.⁣ ⁣ Designing performance facilities is my version of arts and crafts. I take great pride in designing and building bespoke spaces that meet the specific needs of the client. I also think that in the case of a professional sports team (And I am admittedly more than a little biased here) the gym is (or should be) the most important room in the facility and warrants that level of attention to detail. This project was an opportunity to shape a space that not only serves a purpose but also elevates the way our athletes train and recover as we usher in a new era of Ottawa Senators Hockey. #SensNation #HeartOverHype

  3. The last few hours have been a whirlwind of emotions 🎢 Didn't get a chance to say proper goodbyes to my KC peeps 🥲 already packed, left our apartment behind and landed in NYC 🌪 Thank you to our Kansas City family for such a warm welcome over the past 7 years. It will be the friends, the new friends, the Chiefs women, the family, the gatherings that will stay with me. I am beyond grateful to have experienced it all. Because there are no challenges too great for this human I share my life with. No half measures. Let's go all the way to the end - why not 🛫 So much admiration for your strength, resilience and determination @laurentduvernaytardif 💚 I'm so happy for you.
