  3. In the end, it turned out great. But boy was it a struggle to get there. For the first time that I can remember, I felt like crap at the beginning of a race. Consequently, I spent the majority of the day trying to hold things together. I came into this race with high expectations. After last year’s painful march to the finish line, I immediately decided that I’d come back and try again. I knew that I could do better. I purposely dialed back the biking so that I could spend more time running. My quads needed to be conditioned for the downhill pounding on this course. Very early on, nothing felt good. My left hamstring hurt badly and my energy levels were surprisingly low. I didn’t panic though, this was my fifth 100 miler and I knew that there was plenty of time to turn things around. Keep moving toward! Twice up the 12,600ft Hope Pass kicked my ass, but that’s when I started to feel better. Seeing my crew and picking up Amelia at mile 60 gave me a huge boost of energy. This is where our love story began exactly one year ago. We commemorated the occasion with a brief kiss in the beautiful aspen grove along the Colorado Trail. Unfortunately, my struggles weren’t over. Shooting pain in my left knee stopped me in my tracks. It was 9:30pm, and traumatic memories of last year’s uncomfortable experience were darkening my mood. I took some ibuprofen and hoped for the best. Keep moving forward. Scott awaited me at mile 75 and that’s where my body finally began to cooperate. A shot of noodle soup at the aid station and I was off-determined to finish strong. We charged up and down the steep grade on Powerline, gaining strength and confidence with every step. The training was paying off. We whooped and hollered into the starry night sky while chasing down every flickering headlamp in the distance. The rest of the race was a beautiful blur. The rhythmic sounds of our footsteps jumping between slippery rocks brought me comfort, and on the outskirts of town (mile 97) I was met by John, Amelia, and Dana. Joy! I ran toward the finish line with a year’s worth of motivation under my feet and crossed in 22hrs and 49 minutes. It hurt like a mofo, but I did it!
