  3. 😳 I was SHOCKED when I pulled up to the Supreme Court for the oral arguments regarding the constitutionality of banning transgender athletes from participating in school sports. I was in disbelief that the area in front of the Supreme Court was split down the middle, with a microphone on each side. I guess I had thought that love and inclusion were such obvious and self-evident responses to the case. It was truly jarring to hear the anti-trans rally while supporting my peers and preparing to speak about the essential nature of inclusion in sport… and having to literally do so over such hateful and inaccurate rhetoric about who trans people are. To me, it’s a false equivalence to equate these arguments with congruent platforms… physical space, volume, and stage height. As though we’re arguing about pineapple on pizza¿ We all deserve to be ourselves and do the things we love. Young people have a right to move, to be a part of teams, to be included and feel safe at school and in extracurriculars. Denying trans students this right is discrimination. Period. For accessibility, here are the two competing arguments during the video: “All these people on the other side who are saying they are standing up for women, you are not standing up for women by exposing every single girl in school athletics to being investigated, to being potentially groped, to being subject to these disgusting provisions.” vs. “To see these efforts taken away by biological men competing against them is wrong. It is not inclusive to steal a scholarship from a girl.” Even in this moment, we can see the compassion on the pro-trans side and the misinformed and skewed rhetoric on the anti-trans side. For example, why call trans girls “men” and cis girls “girls” when students that compete against each other on school teams are the same age? And just when there’s a half-second of silence, more yelling from both sides. How exhausting it is to know that our existence is up for constant debate. How painful it must be for young people to navigate the world with this knowledge. How brave we are to keep going, together. 🫂🏳️‍⚧️

  1. How many of these do you know and tried? 😝 ⭐️ Konjac Tofu Jelly (魔芋豆腐, Móyù Dòufu): A jelly made from the konjac plant (devil’s tongue). Contains no soy! A zero-calorie, fiber-rich meat substitute for hot pots and stews. ⭐️ Hairy Tofu (毛豆腐, Máo Dòufu): Fermented tofu with a striking layer of white, fuzzy mold. Pan-fried to create a crispy shell with a creamy, Camembert-like interior. ⭐️ Pea Flour Jelly (豌豆粉, Wǎndòufěn): A savory, custard-like “tofu” made from pea starch, not soy. Served cold as a salad, drenched in chili oil, garlic, and soy sauce. ⭐️ Old Tofu (老豆腐, Lǎo Dòufu): The standard, firm block tofu. Incredibly versatile for stir-fries, braising, and yes, even cubed in sweet red bean soup. ⭐️ Tofu Sheets (千张, Qiānzhāng): Thin, firm sheets made by pressing tofu curds. Perfect for rolling, stir-fries, and hot pot. ⭐️ Okara (豆渣, Dòu Zhā): The nutritious, fiber-rich pulp left after making soy milk. Once animal feed, it’s now a sustainable ingredient for vegan “meatballs” and baking. ⭐️ Fermented Chili Tofu (霉豆腐, Méi Dòufu): A potent, creamy condiment of fermented tofu cubes coated in chili paste. Tastes just like spicy blue cheese! ⭐️ Stinky Tofu (臭豆腐, Chòu Dòufu): The legendary street food. Fermented until it smells pungent, then deep-fried to reveal a savory, delicious interior. (Often not vegan). ⭐️ Tofu Sausage (素肠, Sù Cháng): Pressed tofu rolled in a sheet of tofu skin and glazed with soy sauce, creating a firm, sausage-like vegetarian roll. ⭐️ Silken Tofu (嫩豆腐, Nèn Dòufu): The softest, custard-like tofu. Enjoyed sweet (in desserts) or savory (steamed with toppings), it’s defined by its delicate texture.

  2. This way up;-) First views of my new green roof garden here at our log cabin. Only one year old, it's like a coral reef has landed on our flat porch roof, aglow in fantastical plant shapes and glorious technicolour. So far, it’s settling in amazingly well given the extremely tough conditions. This is an extensive green roof planted out with a highly specific mix of perennials, grasses, and sedums. Sort of like a dry garden plant community, but maybe even tougher to handle both summer heat and our intense Canadian winters. Steep learning curve for my planting design chops, Of course, it’s a brand new friend for my sand garden and bioswale on ground level below. Here's how we got it all up and running... We planted into a shallow substrate (4-6”) of recycled crushed brick, amped up with a secret recipe of compost and time-release fertilizers. I raked the substrate into a series of contoured mounds to flow with the land below and extend the root-zones for specific perennials. The substrate is the icing on top of a quadruple-layer green roof system from @zincocanada. Each layer serves a function, firstly to protect the roof and then hydrate the plants from the roots on up as they feed into the total drainage system. Green roofs are clearly on the up and up. Last week, it was the Piet Oudolf garden in Zealand I profiled for Gardens Illustrated. This week, it’s my own humble attempt to help take #wildscaping to the next level. Shout-out to botanist Jordan Hofstra & Quinn Rogers of @zincocanada who teamed up with s.h.e.d Ltd. to install the system. Plant questions? Yes, that is Schizachyrium ‘Ha Ha Tonka'!
