  3. 10 reflections in no particular order: 1. I am living in a biological research station as an artist in residence. In my previous life I worked in wildlife conservation so striking the balance between painting hours and getting out in the field has been harder than anticipated as I want to do everything and learn everything all the time! I’m happy with what I’ve painted so far but haven’t painted as much as I’d hoped. I think it’s more important to get out in the field for biodiversity education, creative inspiration, and mind/body/soul health while I’m here. I need to be present and absorb as much as possible. Then I can take all that goodness home with me to fuel the painting project - I have until June to paint 120 species and I reckon I’ll leave here with about 30. So I’ll have an extremely full on April and May back home! 2. Stepping away from reality after a really tough couple of years to live somewhere so remote, wild and challenging has seemingly reset my nervous system. It’s full on escapism that challenges the stupidly frantic pace of London life. I haven’t felt so authentically myself for a long time. My crohns is under control (🤞🏻), my anxiety is calm (🤞🏻), I’m just in a fairly constant sense of peace, wonder and awe. 3. Having said that, sometimes there is too much thinking time here which I would usually try and avoid at home through quick fixes/distractions, but I’m allowing the waves to come and go because I have time and space to think and process. Journaling helps. 4. Despite being in the most biodiverse place in the world, I’ve learnt to never expect a visual species encounter and to think of every visual encounter as a complete honour and privilege. The rainforest is dense, the species are elusive and often endangered, so we usually detect species through tracks in the mud, camera traps and audio encounters. Visuals in the field are a total blessing and the sheer joy and excitement of seeing monkeys, snakes, amphibians, mammals etc never gets old. Continued in comments…
