But when you’re a drinks writer who receives several exciting new samples to try every week, the bottle storage solution has evaded me. I know it’s an issue that affects so many of my followers too. There’s nothing like accomplishing something difficult after watching a few TikTok videos! 😂 It was satisfyingly hard work to bring this wall back to life ON MY OWN after I was quoted £4,000 to completely replaster it. I even rewired the plug socket and laid new flooring after being told I couldn’t do it on my own!! Never, ever let anyone tell you what you can or can’t do 💪🏼🛠️ The plan now is to place some sort of beautiful dark wood sideboard in the alcove, fill it with bottles and create a cocktail corner. But the reality is that I still need to shift a lot of these bottles. The most satisfying way to enjoy whisky is with friends, so – if you’ll have me – I’d love to take you through a few of my most memorable bottles - whisky and beyond. I can only assume it’s because you’re also a whisky lover looking for ways to manage your ever-growing collection (or you’re here for some DIY inspo!) It was a glorious afternoon … The advantage of working from home, or working remote as many people do nowadays, is that sometimes we can take a few hours to enjoy the snow and fresh air and then work until midnight. Yazzie @wildernessfit_retreats went backcountry skiing in the hills and I went for a less vigorous cross country ski across the moor and returned as the sun was setting. Red Box : KAVALAN SHERRY OAK 46% ! First off look at that colour ! The darkness of this no colour added beauty always stops me in my tracks ! 😍 Nose : Stewed tropical fruits , nutty vanilla (like on vanilla ice cream) , leather , nutmeg hints , cinnamon dust , dried fruit , and red fruit . Palate : Sweet dried fruit , soft baking spice , bitter chocolate , vanilla . Finish: Long and drying with white pepper and oak notes . Green Box : KAVALAN EX BOURBON OAK 46% I could wear this as perfume . Seriously rub this in your hands and inhale deeply .. aah . Nose: Bright tropical papaya and pineapple fruit notes , tangy pineapple hard candy , coconut , fresh red apple , and vanilla . Palate : Tropical fruit forward sweetness with light oak notes , waxy red apple skin , soft spices . Finish : Soft and unassuming at first only to heat up with white pepper spice that kisses your lips hard upon exit .   1. 🥃It’s day 2 of -20° weather 🥶 and I’m dreaming of a tropical vacation. What better time to talk about rum finished whisky? 🌺 🏝Rum casks are often whiskey casks first. Usually charred barrels that previously held bourbon or Tennessee whiskey are sent to rum producers in the Caribbean. In warmer climates, spirits mature faster, and barrels maturing rum can be used repeatedly. Eventually the barrels do lose their oak flavor, so whisky makers need to be careful choosing their rum casks, or create their own rum maturation facility like Glenfiddich. Not all rum is created equal, but typically a rum cask will fuse whisky with tropical fruit, coconut, and caramel flavors.   2. 🥃One word today: Peat. 🗣Lingo: “Peat freaks” are people that think smokier is better. “Peat Monsters” are whiskies that have high peat PPM. For the novice: Peat = smoky flavor. Phenols give peat its smoky flavor and can be measured in the malt (barley). However, not all of the phenols end up in the final spirit, so the PPM just gives you an idea of how smokey a dram MIGHT be.
