What’s your vocal routine? Me? About 5-7 hours before performance time, I do my warm up. With an epi MKH, a Roland micro cube, a drum throne, classical foot stool, and my twitch viewers: 1. 20 minutes of head voice scales with guitar and vocals, warming the different parts of my voice/ head/ tones. 2. 10 minutes of head voice of the highest possible sung trivium songs. Usually: revanchist, endless, other worlds, beyond 3. 3-5 minutes of the lowest sung bits of trivium to link low and high. Usually: wake, drowning sound, into feast to tie it in. 4. 3-5 minutes of scream centric stuff (full on scream) and singing full on. Rain. Phalanx (for gruff, scream, sing) Then I’m good to go. You’ve heard me recently talk about how I “unlocked” my “old voice.” It’s true. I’ve been singing / screaming in trivium since I was 12.5 years old - since 1999. I was placed on vocals then because we couldn’t find anyone else. I never really understood how to do it; I just kept experimenting till I created the sounds that were me. What’s amazing, after the last decade of proper training/ conditioning/ and insulating/ protecting my voice - I feel like that was the rebuilding and upgrading of my singing and screaming.
