  3. A trip to try what is considered the best ramen shop in Japan (apart from Tomita) is nothing short of a pilgrimage. First things first: check their website (in Japanese) to make sure they are open. The previous time I made that mistake and the place was closed! What a bummer! Then you gotta wake up early in the morning and take the train to Yugawara, deep inside Kanagawa prefecture. Hopefully you’ll get there in time to get a number. If you get there late chances are they will run out and you’ll have to go back! Ouch! Considering they are open and you got a number, you’ll just have to wait for a couple hours in the cold (it was winter time). Lucky thing it wasn’t raining on that day and I was able to get a number (57) by 10am and had a seat after 1 pm. While waiting my only thought was: It’d better be good! Right after you are allowed to get into the premises you can feel it is gonna be something special: the place is sparkling clean unlike many ramen shops. The decor is made out of wood (hinoki maybe) and everything feels top class. I ordered their famous shoyu ramen whose soup is made out of chicken, kombu and niboshi with shoyu tare and chicken oil. As you sip it you can’t help but say “ahhh”! It is pure bliss for ramen fans. The tokusei version comes with some wantan pieces and different types of chashu. They also serve a chashu domburi (pictured) that is just delicious. @try magazine ranks this place as the #1 ramen shop in Japan. Iida Shota san was very kind to allow me to take pictures with him and signed me his book. Really nice guy! This is a must try for all ramen otakus! Highly recommended. #ramen #iidashoten #shoyuramen #yugawara #tokyoramenoftheyear #ラーメン #飯田商店
