  2. Two surgeries within 12 days to remove melanoma from my arm. A surprise diagnosis while going in for a routine check-up at my dermatologist just a couple months ago. To say I was disappointed and frustrated is a massive understatement. After almost a year off from running, and just as I was building fitness for Cocodona 250, I was hit with the reality stick. Training was adjusted; intensity was decreased and I questioned if I should race at all. Obviously I chose to race and clung to ONE goal: Stay grateful. Every 8 weeks for the next two years, I have to go in for a cancer screening. I realize this is the first time most of my family and friends are learning about this- I kept it quiet on one hand because I wanted to maintain my peace; lean into trusting God alone; and contemplate the truth that this isn’t that bad. I’ve had more than enough friends and family battle cancer in the most REAL way- and for my situation- well, I feel fortunate. Life is beautiful and hard; and I’m leaning into the beauty of the strength WE ALL HAVE as humans. I just finished a 253 mile race, not because I was the fittest or fastest out there (goodness quite the contrary) but because GRATITUDE is strength; and I GOT TO push my body even when it wasn’t 100% ready to race. I took a hold of an opportunity because life is short and I want to live it fully no matter if I’m racing to the podium or simply leaning toward what’s possible. I’m not sure how to express my gratitude for the kindness, encouragement and support this past week- thank you from the bottom of my heart. I love this community. Keep Choosing Strong.💪 #choosestrong #trailrunning #cocodona250 #melanomaawareness #yellowrunner

  3. Last night I watched @sagekimzey nod for the last time in the Thomas and Mack. I’ve had a front row seat to gold buckles, heartbreak, joy and a few surgeries. Every challenge, you faced with tenacity and passion. You’ve held judges accountable even when it wasn’t for your benefit. You have grown the sport and brought in new fans. You have stayed late for pictures and autographs, without ever expecting attention from it. We have received so many letters saying you helped people through cancer or helped a child come to know Christ. You give back your time and money for causes that matter to you. You are the quiet champion and a lot of people didn’t even realize they were witnessing history being made. You bridged the gap between rough stock and timed events, heck we even sat with rodeo queens to ensure that everyone felt included in the sport we love. You spent countless hours helping your competition and you studied the sport more than anyone before you. We’ve picked up trash at rodeos, you made a point to thank and get to know committees. You are more than a bull rider, you’re a champion. In what most would call a selfish profession, you have shown me and others how to care about something bigger than ourselves. You have nothing left to prove, even before you take this next step- you are legendary. Most importantly, you have shown our son what it means to stand up for what’s right. 7 gold buckles, over 650 qualified rides, 9 NFR’s, 3 NFR average titles, and you won almost every large rodeo. PBR is about to gain someone that far transcends just bull riding. I’m proud of you and can’t wait to watch the next chapter unfold. Thank you to anyone who has ever extended kindness to my husband, protected him or cheered him on- we will forever be grateful to you. Cheers to the next chapter ❤️
