✨What’s New Wednesday Ruins by Lily Brooks-Dalton Many thanks to my friends at @grandcentralpub for the free #gifted copy of this book. When I love, I love BIG. In life. In relationships. In books. Three years ago, a girl named Wanda was born in the middle of a fierce hurricane and became one of my forever favorite characters. The love I still have for Wanda and her story, The Light Pirate, is immeasurable. And Brooks-Dalton’s newest book, Ruins, just landed in my mailbox! It’s a story about an archeologist in search of an ancient artifact, and it is being lauded as a sweeping story that is deeply resonant for our time. Dalton took me to the ends of the earth in the bleakest timeline in The Light Pirate, and still she convinced me that the world she created was full of hope... and possibly far better than the world we currently live in. So, I’m eager to see what she has in store for me in this newest storyline. •••••••• Synopsis: Professor Ember Agni is a rising star in archeology, pursuing her true passion: unearthing a lost empire that no one else believes existed. Just as she’s about to give up, a message arrives from overseas. A former student claims to have found something extraordinary—an artifact that hints at the forgotten world lying beneath history’s tidy surface. With vindication finally within reach, Ember risks everything for the sake of discovery and undertakes an odyssey that will either make her name or ruin her. Driven by unwavering faith in her vision of the past, she challenges the limits of her nation, her colleagues, and herself in order to exhume the missing pieces of how humanity began. But as she journeys deep into an untouched wilderness, she collides with the wreckage of her own life. On the brink of either discovery or destruction, Ember must choose who she wants to be, and to what kind of world she wants to belong. •••••••• Pick your QOTD: What’s new for you this Wednesday? What was your favorite read of March? Any upcoming April book releases you are particularly excited about?

Big Dumb Eyes by @natebargatze Many thanks to my friends at @grandcentralpub and @hachetteaudio for the free #gifted copies of this book. #partner Rolling my eyes. Laughing. Shaking my head. Laughing. Rinse and repeat. That’s basically me throughout the entirety of this book. You also could’ve heard me saying things like: HOW do you get yourself into these situations? This cannot be true. Do you have a brain? All joking aside, I became a fan of Comedian Nate Bargatze after I was introduced to him on SNL. (Seriously... the skits of him portraying Washington crossing the Delaware are some of the best of the show. Go watch them if you haven’t.) His deadpan delivery and quirky, nice guy routine easily entertains. And in this new book, it’s much the same but with all new stories (except one that was worth repeating). This book was sarcastic and funny and heartwarming and entertaining. Some of the stories were absurd, and yet, he managed to make them relatable and amusing. There was no strong purpose or, truth be told, rhyme or reason to what he shared. Just a bunch of ramblings. And yet, it all worked. Chapters that really delivered: 👏🏻 Bowling 101—where he explains how he failed bowling at community college 👏🏻 You Changed McDonalds—where he prattles over the gall of McD’s updating their value menu 👏🏻 This Is Totally Our Year—where he lavishes love on his favorite undeserving college (you have to listen to his musings or be from the SEC to understand) They say laughter is the best medicine, and I can attest that this book put a big smile on my face and left me uplifted. 🎧 The audiobook is narrated by Bargatze, and it felt as though he was talking directly to me while he reminisced over... basically any and everything. He even added in small breaks with snippets of elevator music; in case the listener wasn’t a regular reader. Bargatze excels at storytelling, and the cadence and tone of his delivery was well honed. For me, this was a must listen, and I highly recommend the audiobook. (The audiobook includes a PDF with pictures!) •••••••• QOTD: in comments

#thoughtprovokingthursday The Situation Room by @gstephanopoulos Many thanks to my friends at @grandcentralpub for the free #gifted copy of this book. Have you seen the meme going around that says something to the effect of: “Currently living in the most difficult section of someone’s AP government exam in 2053.” I couldn’t help but laugh when I saw that. Do you remember any of the questions on your exam? My uncle worked on Capitol Hill for years, so I grew up fascinated by politics. At any given minute, something unprecedented could happen sending everything in a tizzy. The electricity. The excitement. What a country! Sadly, politics have turned into something very different. Divisive. Difficult. I even hesitated when typing up this post. And yet, I continue to believe heartily in this country and the American people. And the possibilities in politics. As such, this new book exploring some of the most fascinating periods in our political history has my attention! It’s a behind the scenes look into the Situation Room during times of crisis. Some of the timeframes I’m eager to read about include: -Transcripts following the shootings of both Kennedy and Reagan -Nixon’s drunkenness which raised the military alert level to DEFCON III -The portrayal of the harrowing hours during the 9/11 attacks -Details regarding the raid on Osama bin Laden -Firsthand account of January 6 One of my most trusted booksta besties, @ohiobookgal gave this one her stamp of approval. And given the continuing nature of unprecedented times we live in, I’m eager to give it a read. •••••••• Pick your QOTD: Are you good at making decisions under pressure? Did you enjoy learning about government in school? Whatcha reading, and should I grab a copy? •••••••• #thesituationroom #presidentialhistory #georgestephanopoulos #americanhistory #apgovernment #politicalintrigue #presidentialtrivia #nonfictionreads #nonfictiontbr

✨Friday Favorite—Five Star Friday Kin by @tayari Many thanks to my friends at @aaknopf for the free gifted copy of this book. #partner @prhaudio Immersive. Compelling. Extraordinary. Some books you enjoy for a time. Others steal your heart and become rooted in your soul. Jones’ newest, Kin, fits into this latter category and will forever be a part of me. Niecy and Annie’s story completely absorbed me. In my first sitting with the book, I devoured 150 pages. I became immediately devoted to these characters. And truly, I could’ve finished the book then. But suddenly, I realized that to do so meant my journey with Annie and Niecy would be over. And my heart couldn’t take that. So, I spent the rest of my time with this book savoring every moment I had with these indelible characters. This story about motherless girls growing into women, best friends and cradle mates... it’s beyond special, and for me, it became a visceral experience. It’s both intimate and powerful. It’s both heartbreaking and hopeful. And it’s a poignant reminder that the bonds we choose are often more transcendent than the ones we are born into. Ah, and then the writing! Rich, poetic, lyrical, decadent, spellbinding... there is no praise high enough for the way Jones turns a phrase. “Heartbroken?” Not yet. The rainbow is bending my way, but I can smell the devastation in the air.” If my heart hadn’t already been wrapped up in these beautiful friends, it would’ve found purchase in Jones’ mesmerizing prose. I’m not one for picking favorites. It feels nearly impossible to me. But let me tell you, this book will be my book of the year. It moved me. It changed me. And by the end, it became a part of me. 🎧 I read most of the book in print, but I grabbed the audiobook for the end. And let me tell you, it was the best way to absorb those final scenes. Angel Pean and Ashley J. Hobbs brought every aspect of these two remarkable characters to life while amplifying the brilliance of Jones’ written form. ••••••• ❓: in comments

✨Thoroughly Devoted Thursday Many thanks to my friends at @aaknopf @atriabooks and @williammorrowbooks for the free #gifted copies of these books. #partner Anyone else remember the scene in Grease (yes, I’m aging myself here) where Olivia Newton John sits outside singing about her hopeless devotion to John Travolta? The heart wants what the heart wants. Well, I won’t sing to you, but I am here to tell you know... I feel completely and thoroughly (hopeless doesn’t allow the alliteration) devoted to these books. As in... devoted to the point of ignoring life and all responsibilities for the rest of today! 🌿Kin by @tayari @aaknopf On Monday, I started Kin alongside @bookmarked.by.becky @chicagobooklover and @rachellelovesbooks , and before I knew it, I was 140 pages in. I have LOVED every book I’ve read by Jones, but there is something extra special about this one. I would’ve finished it the next day if I hadn’t purposely paused to stay in step with my friends. Annie and Vernice are indelible characters, and I know I won’t want to say goodbye to them. 🌿The Mixed Marriage Project by @dorothyeroberts @atriabooks I started this book on Tuesday. I expected to enjoy this one, but I didn’t expect to be so fully invested so quickly. Two days in a row, I found myself 30% into a book and captivated by its unfolding. Roberts recounts portions of her childhood and anecdotes from her parents’ relationship alongside her discovery of her father’s research about mixed marriages. This one is easily accessible and incredibly thought provoking. 🌿The Astral Library by @katequinn5975 @williammorrowbooks As you probably guessed, I started this on Wednesday and found myself at the 50% mark before blinking. I’m a HUGE fan of Kate Quinn’s HF and let me tell you...her writing is every bit as brilliant in this new foray into fantasy/magical realism. From the first pages of the story, I was swept away. Alix is a character I easily connected with, and the introduction to this fantastical library was the stuff of dreams. 💥Now the hard part... which one of these amazing reads do I finish first??? •••••••• ❓: in comments
