  2. Iโ€™ll let you in on a little secretโ€ฆ I never pay for campsites! ๐Ÿคซ How do I do it? Well I use a variety of different apps, sites and books that help find these free and for most of the time, secluded spots to stay at! โœจ Save this reel for some epic camping adventures to come! ๐Ÿš iOverlander Perfect for filtering out camping needs such as propane or dog stations, as well as using their wild camping filter to spot free campsites in the areas. โ›บ๏ธ Campendium Same idea as above with campgrounds to choose from! ๐ŸŒฒ Freecampsites.net This website is so easy to use and shows free as well as paid campgrounds available in your area! ๐Ÿ”๏ธ Backroad map books If youโ€™re into offroading and exploring off the beaten path I love to use these books to find spots that you wouldnโ€™t typically find on the apps above! ๐Ÿ•๏ธ Rec sites Rec sites are a great way to still have camping necessities such as pit toilets and tables but depending on the area and site they can become very busy which isnโ€™t my first pic when traveling with reactive dogs. Hope some of these tips help you to get out there and explore! 2. This weekend, we defied the norm by taking our 5 kids on a winter camping trip at -14ยฐC (7ยฐF) (dipped to -16ยฐC at night). Why? To teach them that life isnโ€™t just about following the usual paths but embracing challenges for unforgettable experiences. Outfitted with our โ€œhotโ€ tent and stove from @citizencanvas, we ventured into the serene, snow-covered landscape, a stark contrast to the crowded and bug-infested sites of summer. The cold brought us closer, sharing stories around the stove, proving comfort isnโ€™t limited to familiar settings and memories can be created anywhere. Theyโ€™ve currently spent the weekend running around the forest and playing in the snow, or sat in the tent reading books and playing cards/Pokรฉmon ๐Ÿ˜‚ and as far as we can tell, they love it! Winter camping isnโ€™t just about enduring the cold; itโ€™s about discovering peace in solitude, enjoying snow activities, and learning new survival skills. The crisp air made for better sleep, devoid of summerโ€™s muggy nights. And, without the usual wildlife or bugs, it felt safer and more serene. We wanted our kids to see that facing adversity, like the freezing temperatures, can be empowering. It teaches resilience, adaptability, and the joy of carving your own path. For more tips on family camping, check out @funk.studios, offering a wealth of content on navigating outdoor adventures with kids. This journey was more than a test of our new gear; it was a lesson in exploration and possibility, showing that even in -14ยฐC (7ยฐF), adventure awaits those willing to step outside the comfort zone. This has also been another incredible @hipcamp location and experience. If you havenโ€™t used it before you should seriously check it out. We camped at Natures Acres, Mount Forest, Ontario.

  1. Everything you need to know about driving to the Arctic Ocean (part 2!!) ๐Ÿš™๐ŸŒŠ โš ๏ธ The Dempster Highway is an extremely remote, gravel road with few services. Do your research, and be prepared. The Route (Eagle Plains to Inuvik): - Eagle Plains is about the half way mark to the Arctic Ocean from our starting point, and is just south of the Arctic Circle (about 37kms). Thereโ€™s a rest stop here and on a clear day has stunning views. - The drive between the Arctic Circle and the Yukon-Northwest Territories border is beyond incredible โ€” unlike any landscape Iโ€™ve seen in Canada (and weโ€™ve seen a lot of this country!). Itโ€™s also where you may experience unpleasant weather (in fact, a lot of folks we met at Eagle Plains had got this far and turned back to try again another day). - Once past the border, your next stop is Fort McPherson, NWT โ€” thereโ€™s gas here if needed, but we went straight through to Inuvik. It is also where you will take your first (free) vehicle ferry, which canโ€™t be more than 2-5 mins across the Peel River. - Shortly after, youโ€™ll take another vehicle ferry across the Mackenzie River. - The landscape becomes less dramatic, and more what you might expect this far north. - Finally, youโ€™ll reach Inuvik โ€” the third largest community in the NWT at just over 3,000 people. This is also the largest community along the Dempster. Youโ€™ll find grocery stores, restaurants/take-out food, and gas. - Inuvik is only about 150kms from the Arctic Ocean, so some travelers choose to stay in town over night and complete the drive as a day trip the next day. We decided to keep going, and camp right on the ocean (more on that in part 3 ๐Ÿคญ). Let us know if you have any questions about the second part of the route! #roadtrip #yukonterritory #exploreyukon #dempsterhighway
