Hey, you know how we said we weren’t a band anymore, and we did a bunch of farewell shows and a whole tour about it and it was a whole thing, etc., etc. ?? well, we spent the last six years doing other stuff including remaining best friends in the world, and last year we played a couple shows just to see how it felt, and turns out it was very fun and this year we’ve been working on some new music and thats been really nice to do also. We all have other jobs and stuff now so we really are just doing this for funnzies, the same way it started in 2007. Anyway, hope nobody’s mad if we give this thing another kick at the can. We’re playing some small shows this fall, doing a couple festivals too, and this summer we’re gonna record some of the new music we’ve been working on and put it on the Internet!   3. For the last few years I’ve been writing an album, and it’s getting close to being finished. As usual, my dear friend and musical life partner of, HOLY SHIT 25 YEARS! now, @nixonboyd has lent his wizard brain to making these songs come out the way I have em in my head, not to mention shredding the guitar and all the other stuff he rules at. Aaaand at the same time Nick has been making a record of his own! It is sooooo fucking cool and and sophisticated without being pretentious, i just fucking love it, and it will (of course) be coming out on @royalmountainrecords later this year. (more on that later) Even when we’re “going solo lol”, we decided it would be more fun to do it together, so we’re gonna play a handful of shows as Nix & Menno. And, instead of playing a whole set of new songs no-one has ever heard before, we decided it would be more fun to do a story time retrospective of the almost three decades we have been writing music together. We have a couple fun festivals booked, and we’re gonna announce a few smaller things too. We’re gonna play some early stuff, Holerado stuff, some Anyway Gang stuff and some TV/movie stuff and some of our new tunes too, but mostly just tell stories and try and make eachother laugh.   1. How to laundry strip your BJJ gis! For 5 gis and some rash guards and shorts, I used 1/2 cup Borax, 1/2 cup baking soda, and 1 cup laundry detergent in a full bathtub of hot water and left it all to soak overnight. Check out the grime pulled out of all the material! I then put it all back in the machine for a rinse and spin, then hung it to dry. I train about 4 times a week mostly in the gi, and I try to do the laundry stripping process at least once a year. I find it’s really effective for deep cleaning and even removing stains in lighter materials. It’s important that everything is washed before you soak it in the solution. #BJJ #jiujitsu #laundrystripping

  2. A Steady Brightness of Being is a collection of letters from Indigenous writers to the ancestors, the future generations, and other crucial figures in this world and beyond. It’s a beautiful anthology of profound messages and insights that was just published by @penguincanada, and it means a lot to me to be in the table of contents. When co-editor @steph_sinclair invited me to contribute, I knew my letter had to somehow be about the Anishinaabe language. So I decided to address it to my descendants that I won’t live long enough to meet, hoping that in the future they’re able to speak the language of their ancestors fluently. I wrote it mostly in English interspersed with some heartfelt declarations in (sometimes broken) Ojibwe. The dream of many of us learners and speakers is that Anishinaabemowin will one day thrive again, and it’s an idea that’s especially heavy when one considers their own lineage. The harsh truth is that may just be wishful thinking. When today’s elders who grew up speaking it as a first language are gone, Anishinaabemowin won’t be the same. It needs a critical mass of younger people raised with it fluently to fundamentally survive. And I don’t have the skill nor have made the essential effort to raise my own kids as fluent speakers. But with this opportunity to raise awareness, the least I can do is attempt to evoke hope. In the meantime, I continue to learn Anishinaabemowin full time at the post-secondary level. It always bears repeating that I fault no one in my family or community for my inabilities. The blame for damaged and destroyed Indigenous languages lies entirely with the genocidal Canadian state. “Reconciliation” means nothing if the original languages of this land die. I’ll continue to make a living writing in English until I can realize my goal of becoming a fluent speaker. And I’ll always have the future generations in mind and heart as I move forward, as my esteemed friends and colleagues in this collection also do. The ability to envision a future was violently stripped from our recent ancestors, and we now have the privilege and responsibility to hope and dream again thanks to their survival.
