  1. the last one is my favourite for obvious reasons 🐝 PART 2 because I didn’t realize yall would love romanticizing cell biology as much as I do 😭😭 Love that a lot of people asked about the colours in the last video. It’s true, cells aren’t actually these colours in our bodies, but researchers use various techniques to colour different proteins or features in cells in order to study them so all of these are real photos captured through a microscope with one of those techniques. More info on the cells shown: 🪨 Squamous cells on the skin’s surface captured through scanning electron microscopy ⚡️ Pyramidal neurons marked with a fluorescent label (I couldn’t find the exact microscopy technique but it’s probably confocal or standard fluorescence microscopy). In the last video I showed Purkinje neurons, which are in the cerebellum at the back of the brain. Pyramidal neurons are found all over the cerebral cortex in gorgeous layers. 🛋️ The gut cells are from a light micrograph of a tissue section through the small intestine. You can see the finger-like projections called villi that increase surface area for nutrient absorption. Not sure about the staining here or if it’s pseudocolouring (the labeling on stock photos sucks!!) 🌌 The nebula looking cells are fibroblasts, one of the key cell types in connective tissue. They secret collagen and give structural support all over the body. The microfilaments, mitochondria and nuclei are fluorescently labelled here and this was probably captured through confocal microscopy. 💨 This is a mesenchymal stem cell captured through scanning electron microscopy and then pseudocoloured to show better contrast. These cells can become connective tissue cells and they are super interesting to study, but also way over-hyped and sold as a miracle cure in sketchy stem cell clinics so stay cautious if you see anyone advertising therapies using mesenchymal stem cells. Let me know what you want to learn about your cells next 🥹 #cellbiology #microscopy #microscope #biology #science #scicomm

  3. Cinnamon Banoffee Muffins 🍌👇🏻 (with unintentional husband commentary) Ingredients 3 medium Bananas 2 Eggs, room temperature ¾ cup (165g) Dark brown sugar ¼ cup (50g) White Sugar 1.5 tsp Vanilla 1 tsp Cinnamon, divided 2 ¼ cups (320g), All-Purpose flour ½ tsp Salt 1.5 tsp Baking Powder ½ tsp Baking Soda ¼ cup (56g) Unsalted butter, melted ¼ cup (60ml) Canola oil ⅓ cup (80ml) Milk ⅓ cup (80ml) Sour cream 1 cup toffee pieces (homemade if you want big chunks!) 3 tbsp Demerara sugar (for sprinkling on top) Recipe: Step 1. Grease a 12-cup muffin tin with cooking spray or neutral-tasting oil. Step 2. To a medium bowl, add flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and ½ tsp cinnamon. Whisk to combine. To a small bowl, add demerera sugar and remaining ½ tsp cinnamon, then mix to combine. Step 3. To another small bowl, add sour cream, milk and vanilla, then whisk until smooth. To a large bowl, add bananas, then mash with the back of a fork until broken down. Add brown sugar and white sugar, then whisk to combine. Add eggs, melted butter and oil, then whisk until smooth. Stir in sour cream mixture until combined. Step 4. Add flour mixture to the bowl with the wet ingredients, then fold with a spatula until no floury streaks remain. Cover bowl with a tea towel or plastic wrap and set aside for 1 hr to allow the flour to hydrate. While the batter rests, preheat the oven to 425ºF. Step 5. After 1 hr uncover batter and sprinkle over toffee pieces. Fold through the batter. Divide batter evenly between muffin wells, filling them right to the top! Sprinkle demerara mixture over top. Step 6. Bake in the middle of the oven for 5 minutes, then reduce oven temperature to 350ºF and continue to bake for 13-17 minutes more until muffins are domed and golden-brown. Step 7. Transfer muffin tin to a cooling rack and allow muffins to cool completely before running a sharp knife around the edges of each well and removing muffins. Enjoy and follow for more chaotic (but delicious) recipes 🫶🏻 #bananamuffins #toffee #muffinrecipe #recipedeveloper #recipedevelopment #frenchhumour #banoffee #cookingtips #bakefromscratch

  1. In episode #230 we reconnect with ecologist and environmental scientist @nicholasdcarter to take a deep dive into cows, methane, land-use, biodiversity and ultimately the health of our planet. If you follow my page you’ll know I state explicitly that some red meat and dairy can be part of a healthy plant-predominant high fibre dietary pattern. When it comes to these foods and human health thresholds matter (how much you consume). You’ll also know I believe that we should also be considering how our food choices affect the planet, all life on the planet, and the future lives of our kids and their kids which depends heavily on the natural world. Just a few weeks back I shared a convo with @thenutritional_advocate where we specifically covered human health an dairy. This episode with @nicholasdcarter is a continuation of that conversation - this time looking at how dairy production affects the environment. There’s a lot of misinformation in this space. From wild claims about cows being regenerative to claims that tofu is responsible for the deforestation in the Amazon. If you want clarity on these claims and many more I think you’ll find this episode extremely interesting. Happy listening. - Simon 🙏🏻🌱 (If you have come across claims about regenerative agriculture, or soy, that you believe are inaccurate, feel free to tag those accounts in the comments so we can start a conversation and hopefully inspire people to reconsider their position) Source: Our World in Data.
