Extreme weight cuts affect women differently. Repeated dehydration, under-fuelling and cuts can disrupt hormones, menstrual cycles, stop fertility, recovery, bone health and organ function. That can do real damage. And for female athletes specifically, losing your menstrual cycle is NOT a badge of honour or proof youโ€™re โ€˜in shapeโ€™. Itโ€™s a big warning sign. When the body isnโ€™t getting enough energy to support both training and normal biological function, it can start shutting down reproductive function. This can be associated with RED-S and can affect bone health, fertility, recovery, immunity, cardiovascular health and ultimately performance. And yet in combat sport, women are still expected to cut extreme amounts of weight and bounce back like itโ€™s normal. Itโ€™s not. Iโ€™ve cut weight for years, trained through hard camps, fought, recovered from injuries, fought with injuries, had five surgeries, created and birthed a child and put my body through enormous stress. Female athletes do not need to stay depleted to prove theyโ€™re disciplined. A missing period isnโ€™t a medal. Being permanently depleted isnโ€™t dedication. And looking like your about to weigh in 365 days a year isnโ€™t health. Performance has seasons. Recovery should too.
