  1. I was playing with my hair during a Skype meeting today, and I had a moment of realisation. I LOVE my hair!⁣ ⁣ I grew up RESENTING my hair. It made me different to all the girls (and boys) at school. I didn’t fit in because of it and I thought it was frizzy and generally a mess. I cried so many times before school because I thought my hair made me ugly. I couldn’t easily do my hair in the morning if it looked untidy, neither could my Mum. It was an arduous task, left for a Sunday. I cried with pain when combed, and I never looked forward to having my hair done. I went to countless hairdressers who catered for straight hair, and endured the worst haircuts you’ve ever seen. I know i’m not the only one who’s been through this, and I like to think those struggles are but a distant memory now. ⁣ ⁣ Now we have hairdressers who specialise in curly hair. Shops FULL of products suited to curly hair, and they’ve even made their way to mainstream stores like Boots and Superdrug in the past year, making such products more accessible than ever. We have online communities purely focussed on tips and advice on products, styling methods and hairstyles for all hair textures. I would have loved to have had this support, and the knowledge that I did ‘fit in,’ when I was younger. However, I am so glad that children and teens have this in 2020, as it shows how far we’ve come as a developing and accepting country. ⁣ ⁣ So, for me to sit back and realise that I not only LIKE, but I LOVE my hair...it was a HUGE deal, and a really lovely moment to reflect💫.⁣ ⁣ ⁣

  2. WELCOME TO TODAY’S CLASS 🧪 ⠀⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣You thought home schooling was over for today but NOT SO FAST. I want to talk about 3 components of a moisturiser! The principles below apply to hair, AND skincare products.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⠀⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ 1. Occlusives⠀⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ These serve as a physical barrier to prevent water loss, thus reduce dryness of the hair. Examples are dimethicone, mineral oil, petrolatum and natural oils like olive, castor and avocado. ⠀⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⠀⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ 2. Emollients⠀⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ Usually hydrophobic oils which form a film on the surface of hair. As they are lubricants they provide the slip we looove to feel when we slather on a deep conditioner and comb through. They smooth and flatten the cuticle and help with the detangling process. Examples are silicones, oils and butters. An emollient WILL possess some occlusive properties so they’re often lumped together, but an emollient’s main function is to soften.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ 3. Humectants ⠀⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ These are hydrophilic molecules which RETAIN moisture. They use hydrogen bonding to draw in water molecules from the air, INTO our hair keeping it niceeee and moisturised. Examples are glycerin, propylene glycol, urea and hyaluronic acid. These are great for counteracting drying ingredients like certain alcohols e.g. isopropyl alcohol. ⠀⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⠀⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ So, how do all of these ingredients work together?⠀⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ➡️ Your humectants draw in water to the skin or hair from the air in high humidity, but in low humidity environments, they draw water from surrounding skin cells or hair strands. This has the potential to create dryness. This is where you need an occlusive agent to TRAP the moisture in, then the emollient finishes the job and fills in the gaps between the hair cuticle or skin flakes, creating a nice smooth surface!⠀⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⠀⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ So there we have it - a whistle stop tour of what creates moisture. Now for the HOMEWORK- go look at your product’s ingredients and see if you find any of the examples I’ve spoken about above. Perhaps the lack of, or abundance of one of the components above will help you discover why they have/haven’t worked for you!
