  1. “My gums bleed when I brush/floss/clean between… so I’ve stopped” No blood no problem, right? WRONG 👎 So many patients avoid cleaning when they see blood, but blood is a sign that we aren’t cleaning our mouths effectively. 🩸 Why do our gums bleed? 🩸 We have PLAQUE (the white yellow build up on our teeth) in our mouths all the time. Plaque contains bacteria 🦠 When it sits on our teeth for too long, our gums recognise the bacteria and try to fight it, a bit like an infection. Blood rushes to the area and it becomes swollen and inflamed. Then when we go poking around with toothbrushes, floss, interdental brushes, it pours with blood. It can be quite alarming 🚨 But the good thing is, we know how to treat it 🤓 If we brush and floss CORRECTLY, then our gums will calm down and the bleeding should stop! In some cases, bleeding gums are a sign of severe GUM DISEASE and a deep cleaning might be required to assist in stopping the bleeding. However proper home care is always essential in stabilising the disease. The key is to keep the bacteria moving and stop it sitting still for too long! Gum disease has been linked with many systemic diseases including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer and more. 3. There is a RIGHT way to use an electric toothbrush and MOST people are doing it wrong! 🙈 If you have an Oral B electric toothbrush (with a round oscillating head) you simply just need to point it in the right direction and LET THE BRUSH DO THE WORK! 🪥 Three to four seconds on each tooth surface allows the brush head to disturb the plaque and clear the gum line. If we move it around, we don’t allow it to complete its motion and we will end up leaving some plaque behind. This can lead to bleeding gums and tooth decay. The CORRECT technique: 1. Start on one side at the back of your mouth 2. Angle the brush at 45 degrees, pointing towards the gums 3. “Cradle” a single tooth with the brush head 4. Hold still for 3-4 seconds and then move to the next tooth 5. You should feel the bristles of the brush on your gum line 6. Follow the gum line round 7. When cleaning the front of your lower front teeth, the brush handle should be horizontal, but for the back of those teeth it should be vertical 8. Once you’re done, remember to spit the toothpaste out but don’t rinse it! Give this technique a try and let me know if your teeth feel cleaner (because they definitely will be 😉) . . #thetooththerapist #oralhealth #dentalroutine #waterflosser #dentaltherapist #oralmicrobiome #dentistry #rdh #dentalhygienist #dentalcare #airflow#whiteteeth #stainremoval #dentalhygiene #teeth #smile #hygienist #dentistlondon #londonhygienist #dentalhygienistlondon #hygienistenfield #dentistenfield #dentistryatuni #gumdisease #dental #dentaladvice #teethwhitening #gumdiseasecure #gumdiseasetreatment
