  1. I say this as someone who works in the tourism industry… Rome is way too crowded. 7 AM - 8 AM used to be the best time to visit Saint Peter’s Basilica. There was no wait to get in. Masses were happening at all the side chapels. It was a quiet and prayerful time. Later in the morning, the tour groups would arrive and it would seemingly be turned into a museum until the next morning. But now all of Rome is too crowded and that extends to the Vatican. This morning the wait to tour was over one hour to get into the basilica at 7 AM!!! Yes, there is still access to the new prayer entrance with no wait, for those coming to Mass and confession, but it’s no longer a time of peace and quiet as tour groups and sightseers are lining up at 6:30 AM. 🤦🏻‍♂️

I keep thinking I’ll look outside and see you laughing on the swings. Or you’ll slowly open my door and walk up to my bed and that I’ll hear your sweet voice saying, “Mama?” Oh, the pain is indescribable. And yet, you have shown us in multiple ways that you are with us. It’s not the same joy as holding your hand or hearing your voice, but there is an unexplainable joy that only comes with knowing you are with Jesus. That you are in our true home. And that you are very, very happy. I can picture your smile that would light up the room. I can hear you laughing and screaming as you run with your arms out. I can see you dancing and spinning in circles. I know you are running into the arms of every Saint you meet with that big grin and saying, “Hi, I’m Micah.” It’s easy to picture these things because this is what you did when you were alive on earth. Please continue to visit me and help mama keep going. You were always such a good helper and eager to make me smile. And I will keep asking for your help. My boy. I am so proud of you. Yesterday was the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. I was reminded of how much you loved singing the Ave Maria after our prayers and how you said “Mama Mary is the goodest girl in the whole entire world.” Well, now you’re in Heaven with her.   3. It’s been one week since we had to leave the hospital. One week since it was decided that you would never step foot into our house again. Leaving you alone in that room and walking away was the most gut-wrenching thing I’ve ever had to do. Every motherly bone in my body ached at how wrong it felt. It’s also been one week of witnessing your little miracles. One week of seeing signs of you and feeling your little “hellos”. I never expected how the pain and the consolation would go hand in hand. How each breath in my lungs would burn with the fact that we have to live on without you. And how each smile in my memory would give me visions of your smiles in Heaven. I think back on the prayers I said while in the hospital, over and over again: Please, God. I’m begging you. Let me take his place. I’ll do anything. God, why are you doing this? Lord, if it be Your will, let this cup pass from me. Oh Jesus, I surrender myself to You. Take care of everything. Let all this be for Your glory. God, You are so good. In the midst of my sorrow and grief, we experienced a lot of peace. I felt so loved, protected, held up by the Body of Christ. And it began to make sense when Micah became a light for others. Through him, the Lord has been giving purpose to our pain, and revealing His presence, His mercy, and His promise of eternal life. I’ve never desired Heaven more than I do now. Jesus, you gave us the most beautiful and precious gift of salvation. You gave us Your body, You laid down Your life on that cross. And you have asked me to give my most beautiful and precious gift of my child. To give up his little body and lay his life down at Your feet. And because of Your promises, because You are so good, I surrender. “But we do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, about those who have fallen asleep, so that you may not grieve like the rest, who have no hope.
