I shared an article in my stories earlier this morning, but wanted to make a permanent spot for this in my feed! According to Warner Bros. Press Release: "Grounded in research and feedback from the Deaf community, as well as counsel from community leaders, Barbie with ASL was produced for Max featuring ASL performer Leila Hanaumi. Barbie with ASL will be displayed as a unique title in-app and can be identified by its key art with the sign language symbol." There will also be a special community showing on December 14th in collaboration with Deaf West Theater ( @deafwest ) where Leila will have a post-screening conversation with the Barbie star, Margot Robbie! This is very exciting to see more and more movies having an option for an ASL version to view onscreen!   3. It’s been THIRTY-ONE (31) years since an ASL performer has been spotlighted equally beside their hearing performance peers at the Super Bowl. In 1993, Marlee Matlin ( @themarleematlin )and Garth Brooks ( @garthbrooks ) showed the world how it could and should be done and yet THREE DECADES have come and gone and this has yet to become the standard. (Yes, I posted about this last year and will continue to do so until something changes.) Technology is on a whole other level, yet we STILL can’t make room to prioritize accessibility. Picture-in-Picture (PIP) has been around for nearly 50 years and would be an easy solution to providing equal access, yet it STILL isn’t utilized at all for large televised events like the Super Bowl. What will it take? This is a serious question from me. What will it take for accessibility to be seen as a priority and not a burden? 😒💔 It’s time for a change. Yes, some changes are being made… but it’s almost like we’re going sideways instead of forward. Gaining EQUAL access to major televised events shouldn’t be so difficult. Especially when the technology exists. We shouldn’t have to have to use another device other than the TV/cable broadcast channel to view the ASL interpretation of the national anthem/halftime show. Put the performers side-by-side and/or utilize Picture-in-Picture. The Deaf community deserves at least that.
