  2. 1. We were able to develop a friendship first. Without introducing intimacy early on we were able to see if we actually liked each other as people first. Because of that, the friendship in our marriage is still there because we spent our dating period focused on building that over anything else. 2. We built our relationship on our faith, shared values, and our love for the people around us. This isn’t to say that attraction and chemistry don’t matter. They do and you definitely need it. But, we were able to focus on the other components of a relationship a lot more because we waited. This shows up in marriage because even if we don’t agree on everything, we always know we have the same goal. 3. Pretty much everything seems new and special. We went on a road trip this weekend and had moments like, “wow we get to do this together forever?” 😂 sounds so corny but having to wait for something makes you appreciate it a lot more. 4. It teaches you delayed gratification. We’re used to getting everything so quickly in our society. Waiting shows you that short term sacrifice has long term benefits if you’re willing to do the work for it. 5. We had to figure out others way to connect besides one thing.. which has helped us now and will be beneficial in the long run. 6. The trust is different.. because we were able to show each other that we have self control it’s easier to believe that now that we’re married. Also, don’t let these people lie to you. 2. I was a single parent for most of my adult life and Valentine’s Day was always kinda hard for me. I would see my coworkers get flowers delivered to the office, or they would show off their new jewelry or talk about their romantic evening plans. And I never had that - not once. When my kids were young and I was so tired and so lonely, it was a day I came to dread. So I decided I would take my kids out to dinner, insistent on recognizing and honoring the love I had in my life, even if it wasn’t the love glamorized in romantic movies. Eventually my kids thought of it as their special day with me. They looked forward to flowers, chocolate and a stuffed animal well into their teen years. When Gabriel and I got together, I said I didn’t want to celebrate Valentine’s Day together. I didn’t want to be a part of a thing that had caused me to feel less than in the past. I wanted to feel our love every day and I wanted to buy my kids stuffed animals and candy like I had always done. Gabriel respected my wishes, and within a few years was adding a gift or two to the kids’ Valentine’s Day haul. This year we are celebrating Valentine’s Day by watching my teen perform in the All-State Jazz Band. Nothing has changed, and everything has changed. I’m so glad for those years where I had to recognize and appreciate love outside of romance. My younger kiddo graduates high school this year and my older kiddo became a father last November. They are moving into their own adult worlds and, as they do, each and every Valentine’s memory I have with them becomes more and more precious to me. And now, at perhaps our last Valentine’s Day with kids at home, I’m even more grateful for how this insistence on honoring all the love in my life has strengthened the romantic love I have now with my spouse. It is so much stronger and so much deeper because our love is so much bigger than the two of us, it is a part of our family and our community. I’m nervous about what comes next. I’m not sure who I will be when I’m not caring for my beautiful babies every day, when they aren’t filling our home with joyful noise. But I know we’ll be okay. This is better than I ever dreamed of.

  3. finally posting these photos by @mxtvisuals and graphic by @old.pegasus 🥳 tldr LETS CELEBRATE (tinyurl.com/tiannas23rd) hey y’all! you are cordially invited to my 23rd birthday FUNDRAGER and mini market!!! as I turn 23 this year (aka my golden year) I have been super reflective and nostalgic about the people who got me here. during my 21st birthday I held an online fundrager that showed how powerful and so full of love we were in the roughest of conditions. this year I want to celebrate with you all in a hybrid format and have an in person party that emulates the parties I went to growing up. at the core of this all is that I miss y’all😭 but all i want for my bday is to celebrate with loved ones and community that we’ve been through a lot and still have so much to live for 💜 for this years fundrager, i’m asking folks to come to the mini market! the 25th is typically Black Friday and I want to invite y’all to come and also support some small businesses and organizations who are doing great work for the community and who have had a personal impact on me. this makes it so you all can choose different causes that feel right for you but if you can’t decide, my own booth will be fundraising to help develop the Filipinx American Studies in the U.S. it’s also the weekend of things taken and if you’re someone who isn’t able to be with family around this time, i also invite you to come thru :3 as the pandemic rages on, we need each other more now than ever. even if we don’t know each other well, you are just as welcome!!! more details will come but for now pls RSVP!! 💜 hope to see y’all there! alt text available
