  3. When I was younger, I wasn’t sure if I would have children. I thought of myself as very individual and alone, and I grew to find comfort in that. I liked to be intellectual, in control, and serious about myself. I liked to be unreachable and indulgent in myself and my goals. I couldn’t relate to the playfulness of a child, their messiness, the confrontation of their big out-loud emotions. These were things I either never had, or wouldn’t allow myself to have. It overwhelmed me. I leaned toward being alone where I found the most convenience and comfort. When I became pregnant with Benjamin, I was barely turning 22. In those beginning years of adulthood, I started to really move with that “nothing to lose” mindset. I was not on a good path. The future didn’t matter to me, other people didn’t matter to me, and I hardly mattered to me. Benjamin disrupted all of that and pulled me to earth. I lost all my friends, I shed myself as I knew it and I had to become someone I’d never been before. I had to learn how to make my choices for the genuine wellbeing of someone else, and not for my own changing moods. I thought I was grown. No. I did my real growing up right there with him in our own little world. When Ben was 6, I finally felt confident enough to have another. Samson came then. Crazy how I was a totally different woman by then, but still learning. Always learning. And that’s the thing. They are the reason I learn— and don’t get too comfortable in my own old opinions or grudges. They are the reason the future matters. They are the reason I keep building. They are the reason I’ve learned to be playful. They are the reason I care about people; people I don’t know, vulnerable people, all people. They’ve added all the dimension and color to who I am. They’ve irreversibly deepened and softened my heart. They were meant for me and I for them. Moment by moment, I was equipped, I had just enough, I found new muscles in myself. Yesterday I heard a soft song in the car on my way back from getting coffee and I just bawled at how much I love these boys. How incredibly blessed I feel to be given them. How wonderful and meaningful they make each day.♥️ #motherhood
