💐April Hopefuls💐⁣ ⁣ Eventually, I will take pretty book pictures outside again. But since Chicago has swung from a beautiful 70 degrees to cold and rainy, that day is not today.⁣ ⁣ Regardless, I feel like the books themselves are particularly pretty this month. And I’m crossing my fingers for a few books in the mail that I will be adding to this stack.⁣ ⁣ I have plenty to look forward to in April other than books: having friends over for Easter dinner, seeing Hamilton with my ten year old, and going to a White Sox game with our school community.⁣ ⁣ Plus, lots of quality outside time as baseball season starts for both my kids. Hopefully, I will not need my heated vest too often.⁣ ⁣ Thank you to the tagged publishers for the gifted books!⁣ ⁣ ❓❓❓What are you excited about in April, in books or life?⁣ ⁣ ⁣ to be read - book stack - spring books - new release books #toberead #bookstacks #alwaysreading #newreleasebooks #tbr⁣

The Shock of the Light (thank you #gifted @vikingbooks @prhaudio ) is worth making an exception to my “I don’t read WW2 historical fiction” rule.⁣ ⁣ Full of emotion and completely compelling, the story follows British twins Tessa and Theo. Tessa, bored at her job as a secretary, jealous and worried about her brother in the Royal Air Force, joins the Special Operations Executive as a French spy and courier. Two years later, as the war ends, her brother returns home with no idea what happened to his sister. ⁣ ⁣ Both characters were so memorable. Tessa is opinionated, smart, a risk-taker. Theo is loyal and a rule-follower, but struggling with his own secret and the (misplaced) shame it brings.⁣ ⁣ Much more than just a war novel, we see the years afterwards, including the Nuremberg trials. The rebuilding, the resentment, and even some conspiracies.⁣ ⁣ It’s the type of novel I sat down to read for 15 minutes before doing laundry, then realized an hour had passed since I couldn’t put it down.⁣ ⁣ Any historical fiction reader will love this. And if you, like me, only pick up the occasional WW2 novel, make it this one. 4.5⭐️⁣ ⁣ 🎧The audiobook is expertly read by Susie Riddell. She voices all three points of view with distinction, giving each character their own nuances. The tension throughout the book, the dangers the characters face, are only enhanced by her narration. I highly recommend either format.⁣ ⁣ The Shock of the Light published Tuesday!⁣ ⁣ ❓❓❓What are you reading today and how are you liking it?⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ World war two fiction - new release books - book review - women in history - #historicalfictionnovel #theshockofthelight #bookreviews #ww2books

🎧Must Read Non-Fiction (#gifted @prhaudio )🎧⁣ ⁣ It’s been one of my goals this year to listen to one non-fiction book a month. I’m more or less succeeding. And here are two I think people need to read!⁣ ⁣ 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 (thank you @prhaudio ) is one of the more eye-opening books on education that I’ve read.⁣ ⁣ I’ve always been taught that ending school segregation was a good thing. But here, Rooks outlines how it harmed Black children and communities. How only Black children integrated, not the Black teachers that would’ve looked out for these students. How Black children were quickly put into remedial classes, ignoring their potential and causing more harm. ⁣ ⁣ With examples from both large studies across the US and personal examples from her own childhood and her son’s, Rooks illustrates the way integration did not achieve its goals. ⁣ ⁣ I listened to the audio, narrated by the author. It’s exactly the kind of non-fiction I’m looking for, one that teaches me something new and a different way to look at the world. I will admit, I found it a little dry at times, but still very glad I listened. Thanks for the recommendation @reliablebookgirl_rbg ⁣ I’m pretty sure everyone on bookstagram has told me to read 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗮𝗺𝗮 𝗟𝗼𝘃𝗲.⁣ ⁣ I don’t know if there’s anything I can say that hasn’t already been said. An absolutely amazing story about second chances and forgiving yourself. I felt like it helped me understand addiction, how you can absolutely love your children and still make choices where you end up behind bars. And then how difficult it can be to get out again. ⁣ ⁣ ❓❓❓How often do you read non-fiction? Do you have one you’d recommend to me?⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #nonfiction #memoirs #integrated #themanylivesofmamalove #audiobook

This Kind of Trouble (thank you #gifted @tinyrepbooks @prhaudio ) explores mental health and the way the past affects our present through the lens of a Nigerian family.⁣ ⁣ It travels from 1905 in a small village where three virgins somehow become pregnant, and the fallout when the village learns how this happened. To the 1960s, where Margaret and Benjamin- both characters descended from those villagers- fall in love. To 2005, when Margaret struggles with hallucinations and Benjamin wants to reconnect with the daughter he abandoned. ⁣ ⁣ It’s about the things we do for family. The unknown consequences of our actions. ⁣ ⁣ Eze’s debut was full of fantastic quotes. “Perhaps it began with Benjamin himself those forty or so years ago when he’d moved to Lagos, that city damp with heat, aflame with postindependence ambition, unconscious of its chaos.”⁣ ⁣ Benjamin’s abandonment of his mentally unwell wife and infant was hard for me to get over though.⁣ ⁣ 🎧I paired the print and audio. Narrator Diana Yekinni’s accent really brought the family to life. Unfortunately, there are quite a few time jumps and a larger cast, which made the book a bit harder to follow on audio. I ended up rereading a few sections in print to make sure I caught it all. ⁣ ⁣ And the ending? It left me with questions about what exactly had happened. But maybe that would make this great for a book club. 3.5⭐️⁣ ⁣ This Kind of Trouble published August 5!⁣ ⁣ ❓❓❓Are there books you wish you’d read with someone else? What are you listening to today?⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #alwaysreading #windycitybookstagrammers #justbooksbookstagram #thiskindoftrouble #nigerianauthors #debutbooks
