June 20 | Eritrean Martyrs’ Day 🇪🇷🕯️ Yesterday marked the Martyrs’ Day in #Eritrea to honor the lives lost during the 30-year war for independence with #Ethiopia Last year, I joined my sisters Roweida and Zeinab at Bahti Meskerem Square in #Asmara. We lit candles with the families of the fallen, listened to moving speeches by surviving soldiers, and felt the weight of a nation’s collective memory. What moved me most were the symbols: - Worn shoes of the fighters ( Shida) - Twisted cloth scarves once used in war to cover faces, carry the fallen, or survive the cold, now worn with pride as symbols of resilience - Candles lit by both #Muslims and #Christians, standing together in unity 🕯️ After the ceremony, we met up with our Eritrean brothers Meron Isaak and Elud, and wandered around Asmara, witnessing how every corner of the city honored the day in its own heartfelt way... Shops were shuttered, streets fell silent, and candles flickered on every doorstep, window, and balcony.
