  3. Good Morning everyone. Happy Thursday! This week I have been planting out most of my veggies and fruit bushes, herbs and annual flowers in readiness for the summer. My kitchen garden might look quite sparse at the moment, but in a few short weeks it will be abuzz with bees and butterflies, the beans will be scrambling up their canes, and I will have so many sweet peas that I will be giving them away at the garden gate. Before I know it, this whole garden will be so lush with flowers and produce that I will scarcely be able to get down the pathways, and later in the summer the dahlias and strawflowers will be doing their thing and we will have beetroot and tomatoes, squashes and courgettes coming out of our ears! Here are a few past and present photos of this, my favourite corner of the garden. With the addition of another two Elegance Arches from @agriframes I now have a lovely framed view from the top greenhouse to the little greenhouse down the other end. I am growing sweet peas and climbing French beans up a couple of them at the moment; and when the weather warms up again, I shall grow squashes, climbing nasturtiums and Spanish flag up the others.   1. How to make a sourdough starter from scratch in 7 days. This is exactly what my sourdough starter looked like from day 1 to day 7 until it was active enough to bake with. A jar is a must and I use a @kilneruk but you don’t have to. As long as it’s not air tight. Day 1: flour + filtered water to make a thick paste Day 2: first bubbles, didn’t discard and feed Day 3: more activity, discard and feed Day 4: more bubbles and slight rise discard and feed Day 5: starter begins getting stronger repeat the process Day 6: I did a double feed to build strength and boost the rise Day 7: bubbly, active, well risen, and ready to bake with If your starter is slower, that’s normal. Temperature, flour, water, and your kitchen all affect how quickly it develops.   3. 25°C in London today and this @david_austin_roses rose is bathing in the heat like it’s on holiday ☀️😌🌿 This rose came home with me on a bit of a ‘why not’ moment on a garden centre shopping spree (pretty sure I fell for the name 😅) and planted it in a sunny spot… and it has not stopped showing off since 💁‍♀️🌹 ‘Port Sunlight’ is now over 7ft tall, covered in blooms, and clearly living its best life.   2. My ’liberty kisses’ quilt… is finished…. Taken slowly making this one, a pattern by @jenkingwell called #ipinkiloveyou but I chose to work though just some of my liberty lawns. All hand pieced and hand quilted. Kept in a cake tin and carried around on holidays, days out , with friends and the beach. I still have loads over so may make another one? Try this super easy way of preserving the tomatoes. On a cold winter day you can open a jar, and have that summer feeling, delicious! Our Events are now available to book on our website and just to briefly summarise: We have a very special 'Evening amongst the Roses' with Michael Marriott, (@michaelrosarian) who was Head Rosarian at David Austin for 35 years, in June, at prime roses time. Numbers will be limited so as to benefit from this informative, guided tour of the many roses here and all proceeds will go to the local charity, 'The Talk about Trust'. Entry by ticket only and bookable via the link in bio. We now have dates for the next 'Gardening through the Seasons' course, a 5 day course (held between Sept 2024 and June 2025) led by Troy Scott Smith, Head Gardener at Sissinghurst NT, details of which are now on the website, link in bio. (This is the perfect course to become more hands on with planning, managing and/or seeing to all aspects of the garden. It has enabled current attendees of the course to be more confident, knowledgeable and capable in their own garden - or anyone else's for that matter! The practical lectures and demonstrations are both excellent). We are excited to be launching a Planting Design course for the first time, also led by Troy Scott Smith, (@troyscottsmith1) it will be held here over 3 days, in March, May and June 2025. The walled garden, on the evening before our 4th day of the 5 day 'Gardening through the Seasons' course here @dorsetwalledgarden, (the 5 days are spread through the gardening year, between September and June), led by @troyscottsmith1, Head Gardener of Sissinghurst. This is a course teaching many aspects of how to get the most out of your garden, how to plan ahead, what to be thinking ahead to, and how best to achieve all you have been taught on this course, at home in your garden. (Details of this course are on our website for our next course, commencing in September 2025). May is a wonderful time in the garden - the fresh-looking plants, the lush greens, the emerging blooms and the heady scent are all just so exciting at this time of year. I've made a couple of apple crumbles, one for pudding tonight and one for the freezer - I used a different recipe for these, you soften the apples in butter and brown sugar before adding the crumble topping, we're having it with custard.
