Su presencia en nuestra costa es un recordatorio de la importancia de proteger nuestro ecosistema marino. Ella se encuentra alimentรกndose de pequeรฑos peces utilizando una tรฉcnica llamada โ€œalimentaciรณn con red de burbujasโ€, donde soplan burbujas para rodear a sus presas y luego nadan hacia arriba con la boca abierta para capturarlas. Esta ballena cuyo nombre es โ€œEspiralโ€ mide entre 12 y 16 metros y pesa unas 30 toneladas. Ella tiene en su zona derecha de la cola una deformaciรณn probablemente por el choque con una embarcaciรณn. El trรกnsito por nuestras costas es normal en esta รฉpoca, cuidรฉmosla y respetรฉmosla. Realizan uno de los viajes mรกs largos entre los mamรญferos marinos. Las ballenas jorobadas del Pacรญfico siguen un patrรณn migratorio que las lleva desde las frรญas aguas de la Antรกrtida, donde se alimentan durante el verano austral, hasta las cรกlidas aguas tropicales y subtropicales de la costa norte de Chile, Perรบ, Ecuador y Colombia, donde se reproducen y dan a luz durante el invierno y la primavera austral. Iquique, ubicada en el norte de Chile, es una ciudad costera que se beneficia de la corriente de Humboldt, que trae consigo nutrientes y una gran biodiversidad marina. Playa Brava, en particular, es un lugar donde ocasionalmente se pueden avistar ballenas jorobadas durante su migraciรณn. Las ballenas jorobadas estuvieron al borde de la extinciรณn debido a la caza comercial en el siglo XX. Gracias a los esfuerzos de conservaciรณn y a la moratoria internacional sobre la caza de ballenas, sus poblaciones se han recuperado significativamente.
