  1. Retirement is never an easy next step for any professional athlete. It is especially hard after the rollercoaster of emotions from the last few weeks in France.  The sadness and frustration we couldn’t progress further remain, they will for a long time to come but the overarching feeling is the pride I felt playing with such a committed and talented group of players. The best group I have been lucky enough to be a part of……on and off the pitch. Leaving these players and these coaches is what is making retirement so tough.  I’ve said it many times before but there’s no feeling like playing in front of a home Irish crowd and that’s what it felt like in Bordeaux, Nantes and in Paris on those three special Saturdays. I want to thank my teammates, both for Leinster and Ireland, for everything they have given to me. The last season was one of the most enjoyable of my career and it makes it even more special to do so with people you care about, friends who will stay a part of my life in the future. To all the teachers, coaches, support staff and all those who encouraged and supported my career starting out in Bective, St. Mary’s College, club and school, for over 30 years, thank you for everything.  To the supporters of Leinster, Racing, the British & Irish Lions and Ireland - with whom I was proud to share my journey - thank you for your faith and unwavering support.  To my family, my parents, brothers and sister who nurtured my love of the game and instilled my drive, I couldn’t have made this journey without you.  Finally to my wife Laura and our children, your unconditional love helped inspire me through the ups and downs of life and I am incredibly excited about our next chapter together. By far my proudest moments were getting to play with my kids watching on.  4 years ago we sat down as a squad and spoke about what we wanted to achieve. Our main motivation and objective was to inspire the nation. I think we achieved that. We lost, but we won. 💚 ☘️

  1. 21 years married today and 44. Was looking at this picture in the kitchen earlier and thinking how is it 10 years ago already. Remember the day well though, thought it would be nice to get some family pictures taken...the poor photographer. When Matthew fell over the equipment and Luke tried to chew through some cables it was suggested maybe we leave the studio and go outside...safe zone. In fairness the last photo session for Amy's Communion...well Matthew had his willy out for half the shots and no one spotted as blended in nicely with his beige chinos. So anyway, framed this one and never went for family photos again. Hard to believe its 21 years, doesn't feel it.   2. In the IVF season of our lives right now ❤️ It’s a road we never expected to walk, but one we’re stepping into with hope and love. The past couple of years have been difficult filled with loss, longing, and quiet heartbreak. Losing our baby girl Wynter, at 15 and a half weeks changed everything. Since then, becoming parents has been a journey marked by both pain and deep hope. Sharing this doesn’t come easy, but I believe in talking about the difficult topics rather than keeping them to myself. I never spoke about my first pregnancy online until it ended in loss. So this time, I’m choosing openness from the start. IVF can feel isolating, but it shouldn’t be. It’s just another path to parenthood, a path many of us are quietly walking. And I want to help normalise that. I’m not sure how much I’ll share, but for now, I’ll share this: we’ve started. We’re doing the injections, the scans, the blood tests and hoping this will bring us closer to holding our baby. I know there are no guarantees. But we’re ready, and we’re hopeful. If you’ve been through IVF and feel comfortable sharing your story or positive outcome in the comments, please do. I know others, like me, will find comfort in your words. It’s the stories of others that have helped me feel less alone in recent months, and I hope that by opening up a little here, my page might do the same for someone else.   1. Breast cancer 💔 A journey I never imagined I’d be going on… but I’m soaking up every cuddle before it begins. The past few days have been a complete blur. Everything has happened so quickly — and I’m heartbroken to share that I’ve been diagnosed with breast cancer. I’m nervous, scared, and overwhelmed… but more than anything, I’m grateful. Grateful that I found the lump. Grateful it was caught early. Grateful to Nurse Edel in my local GP who acted so quickly. Grateful that it’s treatable. Grateful for the incredible care I’ve received already. And most of all — grateful it’s me and not one of my children, family, or friends. My first step is surgery this week, followed by treatment in the weeks ahead. It won’t be easy but I’m feeling strong and positive ❤️ I’ll keep you updated as I go, but in the meantime, please do me one small favour: check your breasts. I’m embarrassed to admit that, at 36 years old, I had never checked mine. I only found the lump by complete accident in the shower. I was so lucky. Drove over 300km this morning on a round trip for the chance to capture the sun in the centre of the Harp erected by Wexford Credit Union to celebrate this years Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, ending today. I misread an article mentioning the 50th Annual Scoil Éigse and thought it was the Fleadh. This is actually the 72nd Fleadh and has been running annually excluding Covid since 1951 🎶🎻🥁 Huge thanks to @ianmoriarty for the inspiration to shoot it and for making my life easier trying to find the best shooting location.
