  2. My knights in shining glamour. My day ones. My ride or dies. Being a first born is a full time job. From the first moment another sibling rocks up unannounced, you inherit an unspoken perpetual duty to him/her and any other that comes after. It's tough when you're the first born son of two younger sisters. You don't know it at first but the responsibility that is bestowed upon you from the beginning is that of a guardian, protector, and an overworked underpaid elite bodyguard whose only purpose is to be an unhinged 'destroyer of men'. Maybe I jest, but I truly do believe the job requirement specifically outlines the importance of a death stare specially crafted for any man that thinks he is any way fractionally deserving or entitled to the time of day your sister(s) could choose to afford them. It goes without saying I perfected mine quite early and very quickly. It would be remiss of me if I didn't mention that even as difficult as it has been to be the first born, it has always been tougher for my sisters following in the distinct footprints I've left behind. I have always been "Tutu, the motocross champion" or "Tutu, the great singer at functions". In my sisters' schools it was "Oh, you're Tutu Maina's sister, right?" Of course I can't forget people constantly referring to my parents as "Baba Tutu" or "Mama Tutu", almost as if, of no fault or intention of their own, my sisters could barely be regarded or remembered. They teased me a lot about this, called me The Chosen One, the one who was carrying the family's mantle. And for a long time, I'd feel the pressure of being this beacon of success, never realising the reciprocal immense pressure this granted them trying to live up to a name I'd built for myself in our home. Basking in the shadow I would leave in my wake as they tried to find their own spark. (Contd on 6/6)

  3. I don't know what happens next anymore and it scares me to death. I heard somewhere that the greatest illusion in human existence is the idea that when you become a full fledged adult, all the world's inner workings become apparent to you. That the curtain is pulled back to reveal an algorithm responsible for all the cogs and wheels that run life. That the incessant questions plunging your mind into an unending miasma of uncertainty suddenly stop crashing into you. That it all finally starts to make a little more sense. Even if just for a moment. Life has started to feel incredibly difficult. I feel like I cyclically have to start from square one. More often than not a door will close and there's none to take its place. The piercing loneliness of this arduous routine can be overwhelming. Especially since from the outside looking in it seems like the work of scaling this impenetrable wall of self doubt is a solitary mission, one I can never truly be open about. The tragic weight of these thoughts catapult into my mind where they ricochet and burst into a thousand pieces of potent fear. A fear of the screaming reality that is the unknown. The vast sea of silence refusing to answer when I ask "What next?" "What do I do now?" "How do I move forward?" My smile is ever so wide in the face of those that seek to be reductive when attempting to "fix" me, thinking they are helpful. What serves to make them feel better only increases my affluent waves of isolation. The exchange of pleasantries with an external locus of identity that I seem to entertain is my fault. It creeps in like a blood thirsty spider ready to spin its web of numbingly constant desperation. I know I should disabuse myself of the delusion that this world owes me anything, let alone the slight relief that it can be magnanimous in its favor. Perhaps that kind of entitlement is the peak of my own flagrancy.  But is it too much to ask for confusion to be derelict in its duty and let me breathe? Loosen its grip so I can stop wandering around like a shadow lost in its own darkness? Deny me my proclivity to implode in a foetal position tracing the path to my first misstep? Let me just... live?
