  2. I was too dark, too hairy, or too ugly—at least that’s how I was made to feel 💫 From a young age, it was ingrained in me that having a darker complexion was undesirable. It didn’t matter which culture it was; fairer skin was seen as the perfection of beauty. My family encouraged me to avoid playing outside in the sun to prevent my skin from getting darker, which I didn’t quite understand at the time and just went along with it. I started questioning it when children and even a teacher, bullied me for my skin colour and it didn’t help that I had excessive hair too—often called ugly. As I became more aware, my physical appearance became a source of deep insecurity. During my teenage years, I started experimenting with makeup. What began as something fun turned into a mask to hide my insecurities. I didn’t change my skin color or remove my excessive hair, but makeup enhanced some of my features, and I began receiving compliments. This built some confidence, and I continued to religiously use makeup throughout my early adulthood. Then one day, I decided I didn’t want to hide anymore. I wanted to feel like my authentic self. I embarked on a journey of self love to embrace my true self, both physically and mentally. This meant accepting and loving myself as I was, without hiding. Self love wasn’t an easy journey, especially with the constant reminders of what a woman “should” look like. However, I was determined to build resilience and defy the beauty standards imposed on women, particularly South Asian (Sri Lankan Tamil) women like myself. Now, I confidently go out wearing minimal to no makeup and have come to appreciate my true beauty. I realise that I am not ugly at all; I am beautiful in my own unique way, just as you are too. My journey taught me that beauty is not a one-size-fits-all concept. True beauty lies in embracing our uniqueness and loving ourselves as we are. If my story can inspire even one person to begin their journey of self love and acceptance, then it was worth sharing. Remember, you are beautiful just as you are. What’s your journey of self love been like? ✨ 🎥 @beauty.of.shades

  1. Turns out I didn’t hate the law. Three years ago I swore I was leaving the law because it felt like the ultimate catfish — long hours, constant stress, a culture that made me question everything I’d worked for. But here’s the truth: it wasn’t law itself that broke me, it was the workplace. Once I walked away from that, everything changed. Now my life looks completely different. I still work in law, but I love it. I start my mornings with a matcha instead of dread, I show up to work in outfits that feel like me, I head to Pilates in the evenings, and I’m surrounded by people who actually lift me up. If your workplace feels like gaslight, drain, repeat, this is your sign to leave. Your career can feel good, and your life can flourish when you stop settling for less. Flourishing >>>>> surviving 👀 Tell me your red flag workplace story in the comments — I know we’ve all got one, promise this is a safe space Follow for more soft-lawyer-life energy and showing you that life is beautiful in law #SoftLifeLawyer #GlowUpAtWork #CorporateCatfish #LawyerVibes #YoungProfessionalsLife #WorkGlowUp #MatchaMornings #SoftLifeEra #LawTokNZ #CorporateLifeButCute #ThrivingNotSurviving #LawyerGlowUp #WorkCultureCheck #OfficeGlowUp #SoftLifeEnergy #LawyerLifeGoals #CorporateGlowUp #SoftLawLife #CareerThatFeelsGood #WorkLifeGlow #YoungCorporateWomen #LawLifeNZ #SoftCareerEnergy #ThrivingProfessionals #LawAndChill #OfficeGlowUpVibes #SoftLifeWorkStyle #CareerGlowUpJourney #CorporateButCute #MatchaAndHustle

  2. COMPETITION NOW CLOSED MOTHERS DAY GIVEAWAY Because mums deserve way more than a candle. This Mother’s Day, to say a HUGE thanks for your incredible support these past 18 years - I’m giving away the ultimate Saturday morning reset for two deserving legends. The hardest thing will be choosing what you want to receive! You can choose one of the following: – One 75 minute Face Massage ($189) — (sculpting, lifting, lymphatic drainage and deeply relaxing) – One 60 minute Remedial Massage ($130) - no boring routine here, I've been massaging for 18 years - these hands can ease pain like nobodies business! Bye bye sore lower back. See ya headaches. – One 75 minute The Slow Drop - Restorative Session (valued at $220) — (energy work, brainspotting and reflexology) for the mum running on empty and needing more than just a nap. This one is ohhh so powerful and DEEP ❤️ – Plus a 100g jar of my amazing (usually sold out) Magnesium Cream EACH (valued at $65) - stacked with herbs and stunning cold pressed oils 🌿 One for you. One for your bestie. Maybe you'll tag your usual therapist and bring her in. She needs to receive the Monique TLC too! You decide who gets what — or settle it the mature way: rock-paper-scissors. To enter: – Follow this page – Share this post far and wide – Tag your besties (the ones who get it - you know what I mean) – Must be able to come to Napier on a Saturday in May/June 2025. Live out of town? Make it a Hawkes Bay girls trip! Because you’re not just grumpy and tired mums. You’re the freaking BACKBONE of your whānau. The quiet strength (when we aren't yelling 😂). The mum magic. You're amazing and it’s your turn to be held. Winner announced 10th May on here. Looking forward to getting you on my massage table.
