  1. October marks Menopause Awareness Month with this Friday being World Menopause Day. I’ve never been one to shy away from talking about my health problems, I do so in the hope that my own difficulties may help others to feel less alone on their own health journeys. I have been in chemically induced Menopause for nine months now and will remain in it until I save enough money to freeze my eggs next year and then finally have a hysterectomy. Menopause is definitely misunderstood and can be an uncomfortable topic for many people, but it’s a conversation that needs to be had. I can’t sit here and say that it’s been an easy journey and that Menopause is a walk in the park because it’s really not. It’s tough, uncomfortable, emotional and often isolating. It’s not just older women going through it either, young women like myself are in it for various reasons too, with so little support. I often get asked “So you’re a grumpy old woman now?” I feel anything but that! Yes I’m slightly more emotional and feel like a furnace most of the time but I’m still me. And every woman going through menopause no matter what age deserves to feel supported through their journey, not undermined or joked about. I loved who I was before Menopause and I love who I am now in it but I do admit to faltering from time to time and feeling overwhelmed. I have felt embarrassment, shying away from the patches adorning my stomach and the bruises that stick around after the injections. Sometimes the words still get caught in my throat as I talk about it. I have nothing but love for how my body is handling it and respect for others going through it too. So for all those out there in Menopause or going into it, I hear you, I feel you and I understand you. (Continued in comments…)

  2. This season has been beautiful. Filled with flowers and creativity. And yet it has also been a season of many personal challenges. I’ve also been tossing up whether to write about this as it’s so very rarely talked about, but then I thought that is the exact reason I should be. My own experiences may help others. I’m currently in the throws of dealing with medically induced menopause. Not something I thought I would be dealing with at 23 but never the less is a new thing I am learning to navigate. Many years of problems and surgery a few weeks ago has led to this. I do not have endometriosis but instead endo’s evil sister- Adenomyosis. Years of attempting control of the uncontrollable, the constant pain and finally enough is enough. So here I am, trialling new ways to help it. This is only temporary but if it doesn’t work I may be making the choice to have a hysterectomy. I know writing about this may shock some people as it’s not something you hear about everyday but it’s my reality and I’ve quickly realized it’s the reality for so many people. This new problem has slightly thrown me and has challenged the way I perceive myself, but I am slowly learning to ride the wave of emotions (I mean I can now relate to those going through menopause and those with periods! Double whammy it’s an emotional time!) It’s complex and upsetting but also beautiful to watch my loved ones rally around and support. The next decisions are big and will impact my life. Do I want kids, do I not want kids? These are decisions I’m learning to handle and talk about openly but I am saying goodbye to the pain one way or another. But for now, my flowers, fields and work is my safe haven. A place to create beauty and have control of what is going on. The next few months are positive and exciting with so much planned. I know there will be hiccups but amongst those there will be be good things. I’m acknowledging my platform and I know this will be confronting to some but I am a woman and if I can help anyone by promoting conversation then I will sleep well (in amongst the flushes at night!) I bought myself a pink skirt after my first injection as a treat, self care is important!!
