  2. I was too dark, too hairy, or too ugly—at least that’s how I was made to feel 💫 From a young age, it was ingrained in me that having a darker complexion was undesirable. It didn’t matter which culture it was; fairer skin was seen as the perfection of beauty. My family encouraged me to avoid playing outside in the sun to prevent my skin from getting darker, which I didn’t quite understand at the time and just went along with it. I started questioning it when children and even a teacher, bullied me for my skin colour and it didn’t help that I had excessive hair too—often called ugly. As I became more aware, my physical appearance became a source of deep insecurity. During my teenage years, I started experimenting with makeup. What began as something fun turned into a mask to hide my insecurities. I didn’t change my skin color or remove my excessive hair, but makeup enhanced some of my features, and I began receiving compliments. This built some confidence, and I continued to religiously use makeup throughout my early adulthood. Then one day, I decided I didn’t want to hide anymore. I wanted to feel like my authentic self. I embarked on a journey of self love to embrace my true self, both physically and mentally. This meant accepting and loving myself as I was, without hiding. Self love wasn’t an easy journey, especially with the constant reminders of what a woman “should” look like. However, I was determined to build resilience and defy the beauty standards imposed on women, particularly South Asian (Sri Lankan Tamil) women like myself. Now, I confidently go out wearing minimal to no makeup and have come to appreciate my true beauty. I realise that I am not ugly at all; I am beautiful in my own unique way, just as you are too. My journey taught me that beauty is not a one-size-fits-all concept. True beauty lies in embracing our uniqueness and loving ourselves as we are. If my story can inspire even one person to begin their journey of self love and acceptance, then it was worth sharing. Remember, you are beautiful just as you are. What’s your journey of self love been like? ✨ 🎥 @beauty.of.shades
