  3. TTOM '25 - Yet not I, but Christ in me 🩵 Words going through my mind right now: Sjoh, wow, ouch, oh my word, YAYYY. ( Let me explain) This was once again one of the most gorgeous runs. Besides the route being really tough and me losing a toe nail- I GOT to do this 🫶🏼 From 16km it got tough, my heart rate spiked, and my legs felt so heavy- but @genehoniball pulled me through and kept motivating me to finish with all my strength. Looking back now, the moments that felt impossible were only temporary and the pure joy of movement lasts so much longer. My cup is overflowing. I am so grateful to be part of this community. Drinking from cups takes some getting used to, and we could have had more people pouring into cups because it did get a little chaotic 😩 But that’s the one and only thing I could fault! I vow to never ever drive to this race again, I will always use the Gautrain!   3. Yesterday was a great racing day. Leading to the race I was scared. I was scared because I was going to attempt something I have not done in 7 years; i.e. run a sub 3:40. I had a plan but I didn’t know what the route was like. I had been told that it’s an “easy marathon”, which I know now is a dead beat lie. There is nothing easy about running a marathon except if you are not racing. The target pace had been set and from the very first kilometer I was on track and I would lock it till the later kilometers of the race. I also remained very disciplined with how I approached the race. There were moments I felt I could move faster but after years of listening to Comrades Marathon commentators, I know that the smartest racing is securing the target first and if the PB comes, it will be because of the smart racing done earlier. I ran with a number of men from the beginning and it is worth mentioning that I had an absolutely amazing race with all that were with me at different stages of the race because of how they allowed me to run without talking, and allowing me space to just be in my zone. There were occasional chats but everyone was focused at the task of the day. At halfway, I was dropped from the bunch. I didn’t try to fight back because their pace was not matching how I wanted to run at that point. I ran solo for about a kilometer and then caught up. From this point, I was glued to them until there were only two remaining. Of course I was one of the two. The last 7kms of this race route is tough but manageable if you didn’t overcook yourself early on. There’s just one section that dismantles everything one has done; i.e. Willasdale Drive. It’s about 500m around 37km but feels like the entire Polly Shortts. I lost time here and any predicted finish time😭. Coming out of it is also painful to the legs because you almost immediately descend and then there are two more climbs with one, about 200m taking you up to the finish and immediately you hit the grass and legs get wobbly.   3. MID-RUN CRASH OUT 🏃🏽‍♀️💥 Honestly this was my toughest long run yet 😔. From the very first km I wanted to turn back ☹️. I even told myself, “If my marathon feels like this, I’m quitting running 🤣🤣.” Maybe my energy dipped because I skipped my beloved potatoes last night 🥔 (let’s blame it on that). But I stuck it out and hit the distance I planned 🙌🏽. I’m now writing this from bed after some post-run yoga 🧘🏽‍♀️, about to nap 😆 — exactly what I wanted to do at km 20! Every run has a lesson: sometimes your mind and body sync perfectly, other times you have to power through with just one.   2. Comrades Down Run 2025 — 7:45 Not the medal I trained so hard for, but I gave it absolutely everything I had. I dug deeper than I ever have before. It’s wild how many stories your mind tells you out there. One minute I’m eyeing the bailer bus thinking, “Maybe I’ll fake an injury.” Then it’s, “I’ll just slow down, find some friends at the back and walk-jog it in.” But then… the energy of the crowd, the support, the belief from complete strangers and my friends, it pulled me back. Reminded me that I can do hard things. Then I started passing people… and that competitive fire switched back on. I pushed. I hurt. But I kept going, whispering to myself: Fernie, you got this. Yes, it still stings not getting the time I was after. Maybe third time’s the charm? 😅 But I’m proud. I didn’t let myself down. This sport - this incredibly selfish sport - do it for me. But even the most solo of sports isn’t done alone. The support, the cheers, the friends on the road and waiting at the finish - it means everything. Seeing my people achieve, suffer, overcome… it’s magic. That’s what makes this day what it is. To every one of you who showed up for yourselves, for others, I’m so proud of you.
