  2. In my eyes, a race produces two outcomes: a performance/execution result…and a time result. Leading into Monday, I believed that if the execution was spot on, the time result would be too. For all these years, I believed that “successful execution” meant that you felt strong the entire race, and didn’t make errors. You listened to your body and leaned into the correct effort, even if the correlated pace wasn’t what you were hoping for. In fact: the biggest disappointment from my last Boston was that I was stubborn when my pace/effort didn’t line up early on, and gave up on myself in later miles. I’ve held onto that for 9 years, ready to rewrite the script this year. But what happens when you lean into the correct effort…and shit still hits the fan? For 18 miles, I held back, ready to let it rip once over Heartbreak. But I’ve been navigating some new stomach issues stemming from hydration/sodium depletion. And when that starts to go, it’s irrecoverable. My stomach stopped letting me take in fuel starting at mile 14, but told myself I’d be ok since my carb load was great, I had hyper-hydrated/drank more in the race than ever before, and my race fueling had been great up until that point. But no. Between 18-26.2, I pushed every fiber of my being to keep running, and didn't let myself stop to walk (but did attempt to puke twice, to no avail.) I crossed the finish line after being able to sprint down Boyleston (legs felt great!) — but had absolutely nothing left. I remember lying on the ground, feeling like I was there for an eternity before getting pulled onto a wheelchair and into the med tent for 45-min. Not the race or execution I had dreamed about...but I never gave up. The most important lesson I’ve learned from Monday is that a time and execution can be mutually exclusive: just because the execution wasn’t what you dreamed of it being, it doesn’t mean it wasn’t a success. The only one who knows you’re not performing to your highest level is YOU. What happened Monday was all that I could give. And instead of being ashamed at this finish line, it’s a reminder to myself of how proud I am of pushing, even when it sucked. Onward we go. 🔥
