  1. DAY 921: Dear Zara Recent events with Tom developing RSV (a severe respiratory illness, that put him in hospital for 5 days, at a mere 3wks old), in addition to daily seizures that plague Lulu; I’ve found myself yet again part of a foreign landscape, I wish not to tread. One where both my children, are now unwell. Here we fking go again! How can we possibly be looking down the barrel of potential long term respiratory issues with Tom, along with life long neurological issues with Lulu! Parts of my early motherhood journey, yet again, stolen from me. I’m convinced we are cursed in some way. We have to be. It’s like some kind of past life karma, is playing out in fierce force, in order to resolve past sins. Lessons to be learned, yet replaying itself disguised as another kind of punishment, until I finally ‘get it’ & things fking sink right in. Yet, even with that awareness, its left me turning somewhat of a blind eye, because I can’t. I just can’t. I can’t watch your kids. I can’t watch them thrive while mine don’t. I can’t pretend to be excited for you when I’m so sad (& angry!) for myself. I can’t comment on SM about your idealism, because I feel I should have what you do. I should be living the life you have. I should be having the experiences you are. I should be enjoying a huge part of my motherhood too. So more often that I like to admit, I skip past your stories, pretend I didn’t see you in the street, turn down an invitation from you, or even on occasion, not respond to a message. Because I just can’t. It’s all just so fking triggering. You will never understand how painful it is. How witnessing typical, literally burns a crater into every cell of my body. To watch on, chagrined, as your children flourish, but mine (especially Lu) struggle. And it’s not your fault, but having a true appreciation for what life is like on my side of the fence is impossible, until you have walked in my shoes. And not just for a day, but for years. No matter how many times you see me, listen to me, hold space for me, console me, or hug me, you will never, ever truly understand, simply because you don’t LIVE it. Cont in comments….

  1. 💪 Strength training reduced running injury rates by 47% and time loss injuries by 54%. 🏃‍♂️📉 🧠 Evidence for many running injury prevention interventions is mixed, with effect estimates often small and strongly influenced by adherence, supervision, and heterogeneity in injury definitions and study design. Strength training has clearer injury reduction evidence in other sports (for example, football codes 🏉), so the question is whether we can translate that benefit to runners. 🏃‍♀️➡️💪 📚 This paper improves on two of the common problems. It had reasonably well powered groups for this type of research (over 120 per group in the final analysis) and a longer follow up period (9 months). The program was still home based and largely bodyweight, delivered online. 🏠📲 ✅ What stood out? Minimal equipment and time needed, which is often the barrier for runners⏱️🧰 📌 Study summary This was a randomised controlled trial in recreational runners comparing an online exercise based injury prevention program with running only. Injuries were reported as rates per 1000 running hours. The exercise group had lower rates of new running related injuries (about 47% lower) and lower rates of time loss injuries (about 54% lower). 📊 ⛔ Time loss definition A time loss injury meant the injury prevented the runner from fully participating in their next running session. So not just soreness, but something that actually disrupted training. 🚫🏃‍♂️ 🔍 Critique and context These were relatively novice runners. Inclusion was running at least 5 km per week, average running experience was about 3 years, and average weekly volume was around 18 km. Would we see the same magnitude of benefit in runners consistently doing 30, 60, or 80 km per week? 🤔 We do not know from this study, but it is a strong starting point. ✅ 🧩 Practical takeaway If you run 3 to 6 days per week, start with 2 strength sessions per week for 20 to 40 minutes. Prioritise a knee dominant exercise 🦵, a hip dominant exercise 🍑, and progressive calf loading 🦶, then build gradually over time. 📈 Aynollah Naderi, Ali Yasemi & Seyed Hamed Mousavi: DOI: 10.1080/15438627.2025.2558950

  2. THANK YOU @ultratrailkosciuszko 🌧️⛰️✨ UTK50 was my first and only completed race for the year, and what a quality way to finish the year, feeling proud of myself for doing all the work needed to be able to complete a race and wrap up the year feeling this good. She started off cold, taking some time to warm up and adjust to the altitude but oh, when she did the heat really set in and we were in for a rather hot day. The goal was sub 6 but I soon accepted that we just needed to get over that line, and so we did in 7:00:11. This was the third race I’ve done with @rundoug77 and I’ll always be grateful for the beautiful friendship formed because of ultra. Glad we got another run together my friend. To my friends who raced over the weekend, you guys are incredible. No matter the distance you embarked on, you gave it everything and persevered through the conditions you were given and I’m so proud of each of you. Watching on and racing, seeing people pull out especially on Friday was carnage with unexpected 2hr pausing of the event for lightening storm protection rattled many, amongst the add on of rain and endless mud. Im so extremely proud of you all and you got the fire going again for me to begin my next 100km block in the new year at @ultratrailaustralia Every trail event isn’t complete without its community of spectators, volunteers and organisers and you all deserve a massive thanks for your selflessness to be out there supporting your people and everyone else you cheered for, or provided aid to and so on ❤️‍🩹 @ultratrailkosciuszko thanks for another year of trail running through Australia’s incredible Snowy Mountains. Thanks for keeping us safe, fuelled, supported and for organising this massive event 🤝🏽 time for some rest, let the hair down a little more and reset for the new year 🌞🥂 @create.lumina 📷 thank you for capturing everything that you did during Kosci, and in the way that you did, I’m so grateful for your time and effort over these last few days

  3. UTA100 DNF RECAP I’m going to preface this with, this isn’t a sad post. Running through the Blue Mountains is simply beautiful and it’s so special being able to run through these trails. There were plenty of highs on this run and so much to be thankful for and great takeaways. This was the first ultra where my nutrition was ON POINT and that was a massive win, however, things don’t always work out ✨ At 78KM last night I got to the 6th checkpoint, sobbing for the last few hundred metres before we arrived. It was dawning on me that I could barely walk properly, every step was painful, and if I’d tried to run I’d last a single step and have to return to a walk. My whole lower body was out of alignment. As most of you know, I went into this race still nursing my right knees injury. I strapped my knee and wore a knee brace over it for extra support. The first 10km of the race I felt very little irritation and all was going well, I had hope. 10-20km was okay but my calves were getting really tight and I couldn’t even run on the flats at some points. By about 34km I figured out this was because there was too much pressure from the tape AND knee brace, so, I took the tape off and so from 34km to about 67km things were looking so much much better. This whole time, I could just feel my hip getting more and more painful because my hip was over compensating for my knee, especially on the downhills of stepping down. By the time we reached 78KM I had to very seriously weigh up the options. I knew that the next 22KM included 10KM of continuous downhill and then a final trek with 1400 stairs to make my way up. I could either risk exacerbating my existing injury and creating new ones and putting myself through sharp stabbing pains OR I pull out and save myself unnecessary pain and possibly even more time off running. I sat and cried and talked it through with my crew, called Jamie, weighed it all up, and decided this was going to be a DNF. continued in comments
