  1. Finally getting around to my race day recap. A massive thank you to my brother for supporting me all day, and to everyone who messaged me. I saw them while running and they got me through some tough moments. Funny to think I originally thought I didn’t need anyone… I was VERY wrong. Big shoutout to the Howards too. Hopefully this gives anyone curious some insight, or even the confidence to sign up for an ultra. The Lead-Up: The days before the race I felt so sick. Weak, nauseous and barely able to stomach food. Could I have fuelled better? Absolutely. But I managed some carbs the day before and woke up feeling surprisingly good. Race Morning: I stayed @thestablesresortperisher right in Perisher Valley which was the most convenient thing ever. Two minute walk to the start. Weather was windy, but considering the rain and snow that arrived after the race, I’ll take it. The Race: This course was HARD. Huge elevation and long stretches completely alone. Those last 10km humbled me, especially the stairs to Eagles Nest in the dark after stacking it earlier. Reaching the summit was one of the best moments of the day, but I didn’t stay long because I was so keen to get down. It took me over 16 hours to finish. Truly the hardest thing I’ve ever done for myself. Fuel: I relied on @maplemovement, carb mix with @drinkhyro, banana, energy bars and milo at checkpoints. Honestly life changing. Warm milo might be the best race fuel ever. Training: Could I have trained better? Yes. CP & Narrabeen didn’t cut it. A course like this really demands elevation and time on proper terrain, so if you can get down to Kosci beforehand to cover parts of the course or at least get some training in above sea level, it would help massively. I followed a customised plan on @runna which was unreal and the tempo and hill sessions made such a difference. I also had to be smart coming off an injury in July/Aug, so I didn’t push big back-to-back long runs. My longest was a 50km a few weeks out, which actually felt great & gave me a lot of confidence going in. (link in bio) Gear: @hoka_au Mafate X, @feeturesaustralia socks (zero blisters!), & everything else I ran through on a separate video.

  1. DAY 921: Dear Zara Recent events with Tom developing RSV (a severe respiratory illness, that put him in hospital for 5 days, at a mere 3wks old), in addition to daily seizures that plague Lulu; I’ve found myself yet again part of a foreign landscape, I wish not to tread. One where both my children, are now unwell. Here we fking go again! How can we possibly be looking down the barrel of potential long term respiratory issues with Tom, along with life long neurological issues with Lulu! Parts of my early motherhood journey, yet again, stolen from me. I’m convinced we are cursed in some way. We have to be. It’s like some kind of past life karma, is playing out in fierce force, in order to resolve past sins. Lessons to be learned, yet replaying itself disguised as another kind of punishment, until I finally ‘get it’ & things fking sink right in. Yet, even with that awareness, its left me turning somewhat of a blind eye, because I can’t. I just can’t. I can’t watch your kids. I can’t watch them thrive while mine don’t. I can’t pretend to be excited for you when I’m so sad (& angry!) for myself. I can’t comment on SM about your idealism, because I feel I should have what you do. I should be living the life you have. I should be having the experiences you are. I should be enjoying a huge part of my motherhood too. So more often that I like to admit, I skip past your stories, pretend I didn’t see you in the street, turn down an invitation from you, or even on occasion, not respond to a message. Because I just can’t. It’s all just so fking triggering. You will never understand how painful it is. How witnessing typical, literally burns a crater into every cell of my body. To watch on, chagrined, as your children flourish, but mine (especially Lu) struggle. And it’s not your fault, but having a true appreciation for what life is like on my side of the fence is impossible, until you have walked in my shoes. And not just for a day, but for years. No matter how many times you see me, listen to me, hold space for me, console me, or hug me, you will never, ever truly understand, simply because you don’t LIVE it. Cont in comments….

  2. GOOD NEWS! We got the results of @joshkellymusic’s most recent scan back. NO 👏🏼 CANCER 👏🏼 ON 👏🏼 THE 👏🏼 SCAN 👏🏼 I can’t tell you how happy we are. We’re both exhausted and Josh is still going to be recovering from chemo for another few months, but he’s got a little bit more sparkle about him again and he doesn’t have to have radiation! His immune system will be coming back online and he’ll be able to play gigs!!! (You’ve got no idea how excited I am to see him play with @thirtyseventy3070 in a gig that’s going to be announced really soon!) and he’s going to be recording a second album for his own band this year. SO GODDAM PROUD!!! I’m so proud of my best friend. I am so proud of anyone who has gone through/ is going through chemo. I am sending my love to everyone who is in any stage of the fuckery that is cancer. I have a profound respect for the warriors taking on cancer. And honestly you should too. I became deeply aquatinted with chemo treatment this year. It’s relentless and awful and feels like the most horrible nightmare. And I was just a bystander. Josh actually had to be filled with the chemicals and let all the cancery bits of him be poisoned away in the most unforgiving and soul wrenching process. If you know someone going through cancer offer them all the support you can. Thank you to everyone who has supported our family, I feel like nothing I say these days isn’t annexed with “thank you”. We’ve got plans for our little fam and @thinkthornbury. More life and love and many happy years together. Maybe a sibling for Remy if we’re lucky enough, but that’s probably going to take a few years because cancer has made things a bit more complicated. But if we can get through chemo we can get through anything. Life is really unexpectedly challenging and you really only have control over your own actions. What you do, say and manifest with your thoughts and actions is the impact you’ll have on the world. I feel really excited about life at the moment. We’re dreaming up big plans for @thinkthornbury and really just trying to focus on what is important. I’m gonna write that book, just gotta get a few things done in the shop first 💛🌈 Love Maggie May

  3. 🐮Calf or Achilles injury? Bodyweight calf raises alone won't suffice!🙅‍♂️ From recent research by Baxter, we can see how different types of movements load the Achilles tendon. As you can see for both Loading PEAK & Loading RATE, a single leg calf raise is NOWHERE near the demands of running. 🏃‍♂️If recovering from an Achilles or calf injury, & looking to return to running, you need to ensure you’re able to perform exercises that are a HIGHER load than running (i.e. single leg hopping, drop jump single leg or forward hops single leg). ⁣🚶🏼‍♀️You can also use these graphs to determine rehab progressions. For instance if walking is causing pain in the Achilles’ tendon, then it would be worthwhile starting with exercises that have a lesser demand (i.e. standing calf raises, lunges & step-ups). So if you want to make a successful return to running, ensure you do more than just single leg calf raises! 👋Runners, share this post with your running friends suffering calf & Achilles issues!  🧠Health professionals, if you want to learn more about assessing runners, including all about calf strength, sign up for our upcoming @matassessment Running course (link in bio). . . . . . . . . #achilles #achillestendon #achillesrehab #runnersofinstagram #halfmarathontraining #marathontraining #roadrunning #halfmarathoner #runninginjury #injuredrunner #runfit #runninginjuryrecovery #runninginjuryrehabilitation #runningwithinjury #running #runningcommunity #trailrunning #ultrarunning #trailrun #halfmarathon #marathoner #runlife #melbournerunners #sportschiro #physio #osteo #podiatry #chiropractic 📚Reference: Baxter, J.
