  2. MAKWA: 4 months or so #adoptable Makwa was living his puppy life alone and in dire squalor in a dump (last slide #startedfromthebottom) when a kind man noticed him dirty, hungry, and howling and got him into Heart Mountain Rescue. He’s since been basking in life’s basics that not all are fortunate to have: a roof, nutritious food, and caring friends. Makwa and his foster human came to the beach yesterday for a gander and some frazzled photos. His first order of business was hydration from the river, then he moved on to sniffing, meandering, training, and finally, to biting his photographer (#nowwerehere). Allegedly “all he knows is ‘sit’” but after he picked up “shake a paw” in just a few tries, I’m suspicious he’s enrolled in secret night classes. If he truly didn’t know #paw before, he’s a monster who learns in record time. As is true for all smart monsters, Makwa grew bored of this elementary course and began finding better things to do like bite and bark and howl. He tried wading in the river but didn’t seem to like it. Cedar (another dog having a beach day) noticed the attention and snacks Makwa was getting and came to participate in whatever was going on. Cedar pranced and splashed through his large frame hither and thither in the river while Makwa observed from the shoreline. After judging Cedar mentally well or at least mentally ok, Makwa was open to taking some more steps in the river himself. Do you know someone quick enough to keep this witty whipper snapper amused? He’s available for adoption now from @heartmountainrescue in Exshaw, Alberta. Fosters: @brianamacleod & @tim.staples.9

  1. Dang, this short random video clip went hella viral. I’ve turned comments off because it was getting exhausting, but at least everyone was nice! The original caption spoke to the way IG and social media is changing lately: I’ve stopped caring about reaching my followers because that’s not how social media works anymore, and I never stop soaking up information and discourse about how things are changing regarding the way people use social media platforms. Have you come across the term “enshittification” in your virtual travels lately (also referred to as “platform decay”)? These are terms that were used in a Medium article posted by writer Cory Doctorow back at the end of 2022 titled “Social Quitting” in which he wrote, “Here is how platforms die: first, they are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. Then, they die. I call this enshittification, and it is a seemingly inevitable consequence arising from the combination of the ease of changing how a platform allocates value, combined with the nature of a “two sided market”, where a platform sits between buyers and sellers, hold each hostage to the other, raking off an ever-larger share of the value that passes between them.” There is another conversation happening right now based around the topic of “The Death of the Follower” that is directly connected to the enshittification of social media. If you’re an artist or creative of any kind on social media who’s been feeling the effects of enshittification, I highly suggest listening to Patreon founder Jack Conte’s recent SXSW keynote speech titled “Death of the Follower & the Future of Creativity on the Web”. You can find it on YouTube. I’d love to leave Instagram, and what’s happening runs so much deeper than most people realize. However, I can’t & won’t leave just yet because I’m both contractually obliged to stay for the rest of the year and I actually do use it a lot for stories and DM’s. That’s literally it, though. Everything else has become a living nightmare. Alright, Chalmers out ✌🏼

  1. EVERYONE wants good photos of themselves on a vacation. So MEN, I’m telling you this with all the love in my heart; you gotta step up your photo game! You don’t need to be a professional photographer to take nice photos of your girlfriend, wifey, or fiancé - so here’s a quick few tips that will help you take better photos of your lady while on vacations. 1. Pay attention to the little details (as someone with ADHD I’m bad at this sometimes), but wild hair, or a messed up clothing item will ruin a shot. 2. Don’t be afraid to move around. I’m not saying you need to do parkour, but 99% of the time, the angle you take a photo from when you’re standing how you always stand is NOT the most flattering angle. Crouch down, move from side to side, maybe take the photo with a downward angle. Try out some different angles and give a lot of options. 3. Everyone will be more picky of a photo of themselves than you are. It’s true for you. It’s true for her. Be patient. Give her options to choose from. It’s not a “one and done” scenario. Micro-expressions make all the difference, and if your partner isn’t a professional model that knows exactly how to strike her perfect pose, that’s a quantity of photos thing. 4. LIGHTING. Pay attention to what the sun is doing, what lightbulbs are doing. Lighting can make or break a shot. If the sun is glaring down on her, maybe drop the exposure on your phone a bit or take a photo from a shaded area. 5. Hype her up. You feel more confident in front of a camera when you have a hype man singing your praises. Communicate positive things about what your partner is doing in front of the camera. She’ll relax and open up more. It’s awkward to stand in public and pose for a shot, so offset that with your positive affirmation. 2. PT 2: EVERYONE wants good photos of themselves on a vacation. So MEN, I’m telling you this again with all the love in my heart; you gotta step up your photo game! You don’t need to be a professional photographer to take nice photos of your girlfriend, wifey, or fiancé - so here’s 7 more quick tips that will help you take better photos of your lady while on vacations. 1. Pay attention to your surroundings - don’t take a photo of your partner when she’s standing against a cracked old concrete wall if the Eiffel Tower is behind you. See a cool doorway? Get your partner to stand or sit in it. See a winding staircase? Get your gf to walk down it gracefully. Use cool things in the environment to create more stunning images. 2. Spend the time to ask your partner if there are certain things they really like about themselves: whether that’s a favourite side of their face, a pose they feel they look good in, their smile, etc… Chances are your partner knows how to look flattering in a selfie they take of themselves, so they know what looks good to them. Take the time to ask those questions and allow for them to lean into those preferences. 3. You DON’T need a professional camera to take amazing photos. Smartphones have had this ability for years now - the cameras on them are great! Try mixing it up and shoot on 2x or 3x zoom as this adds compression and in iPhones is basically the same as shooting on a 50mm or 85mm lens, which are both great lenses for portraits. Doing this will really make your partner pop in the image. 4. Edit your photos. No need to purchase expensive editing software; Adobe Lightroom mobile is a free app that lets you edit like a pro. If you’re not super experienced in editing, maybe buy a good preset pack for iPhone or camera photos, or download the FREE iPhone presets I have in my bio if you don’t want to spend the money. A little edit will go a long way. 3. Here are my 12 favourite (vertical) photos from 2023. I’m going to be honest, picking these 12 photographs was challenging for me for two different reasons:

Reason Number 1: How do you truly narrow down your favourite photo from sometimes hundreds or thousands of different images? I have so many photos that I shot on my A7IV this year that I love for a plethora of different reasons. Some for quality, some for the memory behind them, some for the mood/vibe, and some for the beauty of the location I snapped them. Picking just 12 was a challenge. Reason Number 2: I’m disappointed in myself at what I captured this year… or didn’t capture more accurately. Now I’m not saying that I don’t love these 12 photos, or that I’m not proud of so many other images that I photographed. But looking back through my hard drives, seeing what I actually took the time to create… after April, the well is pretty dry. Now I get that there are seasons in life, and this last 8 months was a season for grinding. I’m proud of what I was able to accomplish with my media business, and create for my clients. But in the process of orienting my life so heavily around work and present/future goals, I didn’t leave energy or time for simply creating; creating for me, for art, for joy. What’s crazy is that wanting to let my creativity run wild every day was a HUGE reason why I left behind a Master’s degree, Career, and my old life. And now, I’m at the end of another year, and realize that I gave it so little importance in my day-to-day.

Now, life happens. Bills happen. Dreams happen. So I’m going to give myself grace on this one… because the truth is, I probably let most of the things I truly value slip a little this last year because of some other goals I’m chasing.
But 2024 is on the horizon, and unlike most years, I’m going to actually make a resolution; 2024 will be the year where I let my creativity run wild. • #canadianphotographer #canadianphotography #createdaily #thisismycommunity #sonyalpha #favoritephotos #newyearsresolution #a7iv #sonya7iv #photographerlifestyle #createtocreate #createbeautifulthings #sonyshooter #socality #photographer #albertaphotographer
