It occurred to me that marriage is a bit like a great canoe trip. It's all about the experience and the excitement about what's around the next corner. At times you hit a rough spot, and that's life!   3. Putting the words together to speak to the loss of my dear friend and business partner of almost 30 years has been one of the harder things in life. Peter was truly one of a kind. His two greatest loves in life were his families — the Oliver family, and the O&B family. He was so proud of the family that he and Maureen created, and spoke often about his kids' achievements, their travels, their families and the things that they had done. He never wavered from his commitment to the O&B family and the O&B values that he created. He believed wholeheartedly that it was the people that made O&B. He gave people the opportunity to grow, encouraging them to become the best versions of themselves. He would unknowingly help you to expand your mind, your thoughts and your potential. In my early days, it was Peter who pushed me to set goals, motivating me for all the right reasons. He wanted to make a difference in people's lives — from striving to create memories for our O&B guests that would last a lifetime to fundraising for @jdrf_canada and @leacock_fdn. Making a difference was always a part of what Peter believed in, and what a difference he made. I will miss Peter's sense of humour and all the wonderful stories that he would tell. He was larger than life and his presence will be missed by so many. Until we meet again, my friend ❤️.

ONE POT BAKED LEMON CHICKEN AND RICE INGREDIENTS 12-16 boneless skinless chicken thighs 2 x juiced lemons plus extra for garnish 4 x cloves smashed garlic (or 1 tbsp garlic powder) 2 x tbsp oregano 1 x tbsp salt 1/4 cup olive oil 4 x cups chicken stock 2 x cup white rice (I like jasmine or basmati - don’t use brown rice / requires double cooking time and will dry out chicken) Garnish - parsley/ lemon slices DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350F Marinade chicken at least one hour in juice of lemon (toss rind in), smashed garlic cloves, oregano, olive oil and salt. While that is marinating soak rice in water to soften and then strain and rinse. Remove chicken from marinade (don’t toss!) and In a pan over medium high heat, drizzle a bit of olive oil and sear chicken 2-3 mins a side until it gets browned (I do this in batches / don’t overcrowd pan). In a large baking dish, place rice, 4 cups stock and place your chicken nice and snug in pan. Strain the marinade and pour in. Cover and bake for 45 mins. Garnish with lemon slices (I pan fry to get them a bit brown) and parsley. *you can prep everything until baking step 24 hrs before / this serves 6+ (and usually some leftovers) - you can cut recipe in half if you are feeding a smaller group (6 chicken thighs)

  3. I’ll never forget the first day I met Laura. She and Josie invited me to a Buy Buy Baby event during my first maternity leave, and from that moment, I felt an instant connection. Laura always knew how to lift me up, had a creative outlook on everything, and was always there to lend a helping hand. Funny story Laura and Josie actually FaceTimed me while I was in labour with Gigi to give me support. Laura had a big heart and anytime I needed help with Dreams Take Flight she was there, no questions, volunteering her time.   2. Today’s recipe video is a Kimchi Udon Carbonara! Spicy, chewy, creamy, savory...just so good. It’s super easy to make (done in less than 30 minutes total), and has everything you need for a one plate meal. . . . Tips: -Make it even spicier by adding more gochugaru, if that’s what you’re about -Skip the pork belly to make it vegetarian (it’ll be just as good!). If you do skip it, you can add a bit more onion, garlic and olive oil for a bit more flavor . . . Ingredients: -Udon noodles, pork belly, kimchi gochujang, gochugaru, soy sauce, sesame oil, black pepper, onion, garlic, scallions, mozzarella cheese, parmesan cheese, egg . . . Instructions: -In a bowl, mix 1 tbsp gochujang, 2 tsp gochugaru, 2 tsp memmi or soy sauce, 1 tsp sesame oil, black pepper, and 1 tbsp water. -Bring a pot of water to a boil. Add in 2 packs of udon noodles, cook for ~2 mins, and then drain and rinse the noodles over cold water. If you’re good at multitasking do this while also tackling the next step. If not, it’s okay to just do this sequentially. -In a pan, add about ~1 tsp of olive oil. Add 2 pork bellies, and mostly cook them. When they are almost done, cut them up with food scissors. -Add 1/3 of an onion chopped and 4 garlic cloves sliced. Cook ~30 seconds until garlic is lightly browned. -Add 1 cup of kimchi, and cook until kimchi is lightly carmelized. Then add in the premixed sauce and mix everything up together. -Add in the 2 packs of cooked udon noodles, then turn off the heat and mix the noodles up with everything until the noodles are well coated. Add 1-2 scallions chopped, an egg yolk, a handful of parmesan cheese and a handful of mozzarella cheese (this should melt by itself with residual heat). Mix in the egg yolk and enjoy!

  2. I can’t believe I still have to convince people that MSG is safe. It’s doubly annoying that the narrative surrounding MSG has been and continues to be racially skewed. Good thing I have my fish sauce and MSG margarita to help me tackle this subject. #knowmsg MSG is undeservedly a controversial food additive that is negatively associated with Asian foods, specifically Chinese food. It's one of the most researched food ingredients, and has been scientifically demonstrated to be harmless. In fact, it is placed in the safest category for food additives by The Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives of the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization and World Health Organization. What is MSG (monosodium glutamate) anyways? It's just a sodium ion attached to a glutamate anion, both of which are required to carry out biological functions in our bodies. Glutamate is naturally occurring in many foods, such as tomatoes, mushrooms, cheese, and even breast milk. The campaign against MSG stems from xenophobia and racially charged biases. The term "Chinese Restaurant Syndrome" was coined in 1968 and was used to describe a general set of symptoms that a person may experience after eating Chinese food heavily seasoned with MSG. To this day the negative perception of MSG is still primarily associated with Asian cuisines, even though its use is widespread in western food products. People who claim that they have a sensitivity to MSG only seem to have symptoms after eating asian foods, but never when they've polished off a bag of Doritos or generously dipped their pizza in ranch dressing. I'm so sick of this harmful association and burden that asian cuisines have to carry even after MSG has been cleared of its 'devil salt' status. Many asian restaurants/food manufacturers still to this day have a disclaimer of "no msg added" to distance themselves from the stigma. If your concern over MSG consumption only extends to asian cuisine, maybe take some time to confront other harmful biases you may subscribe to. To quote one of my culinary heroes, Anthony Bourdain, "You know what causes Chinese restaurant syndrome? Racism."

  1. Okay angels, time to talk about rejection. This spring, I received my second rejection from the Canada Council in the Research and Creation stream for my Depression Cooking manuscript. It hurt. After the first rejection I was determined to get the grant the second time around. I attended grant writing workshops, spoke with program officers, took all of the advice I could get, even paid a pal to edit the thing and give me feedback. And still a no. Despite knowing that rejection is a part of moving through the art world, that didn’t soften the sting. As artists we often share our successes on this app, but we rarely share our rejections. In case it resonates, I want to say, ‘hey I’m a reject too!’ If you have also been rejected, whether from a funding body, from an exhibition opportunity, a publishing opportunity, a residency or an award you can still do the thing. You can film the video, write the short story collection, or pursue the series of paintings. I wrote the manuscript and am now editing it. The opinions of two juries don’t really have much bearing on whether or not I’m going to do it. I’m doing it. Depression Cooking will become a book without the Canada Council. I’m going to need to hustle to pay my bills, but I am no stranger to hustle. Thanks to @sanaahumayun at @makingspace.yeg for the mug so I can openly spill the tea on the internet.   2. As an artist who writes and makes art about food I’m compelled to join in the coordinated boycott of Loblaws for the month of May. I don’t need to be an economist to know that the cost of my groceries have skyrocketed while my income has remained the same. Weekly grocery runs that cost me $50 in 2014 now cost me up to $150-$200. I know that many are unable to afford this increase. I don’t believe that food is a privilege. Food is a right. We all need food to survive. It feels impossible to talk about food without condemning the starvation being used as a tool of gen0cide in G@z@. Likewise I condemn the grocery CEOS in so-called Canada lining their pockets while every day people struggle to put food on the table. There is enough food for us all. It is only capitalism and the capitalists that benefit from this system that try to convince us otherwise. Do not eat their lies. The boycott of Starbucks has proven to us that boycotts work. I am reminded of this line from my student union days: there is strength in numbers. Please boycott with me.
