  1. I am still so incredibly excited about this mural. It's HUGE! Like, it's taller than me, and as you know if you've met me, I'm TALL. As soon as I saw this location in the call for proposals, I knew I wanted to create something text based moving up the ramp. The brief mentioned tying things in with the market and the city, and so throwing aside the "double negative positivity" that I usually carry with me and my brand, I went full on positive with my Growing Together message. It's sort of a pair with the Better Together table I did that lives at @shortfingerbrewing, but ties in with the produce and meats grown for the market, the communities that grow together around the city, and the city itself that just keeps growing up and out. As a lifelong resident of KW, who himself has grown alongside the city, it really was an honour to get to create this mural. I hope people dig it! I've already loved seeing it in the background of lots of market photos. Big thanks to @cityofkitchener @dtkitchener @kitchenemarket for letting me paint on the wall! Big thanks to @chris_rouleau for design help, because he's better at letters than me. And thanks to @jennataylr for always helping me refine stuff, and for helping paint! And @vintageacorn who came by and helped paint too! And @thefirm.murals for top coating this for me to hopefully keep it safe! And @attila_the_spun for these photos. And y'all! I say it all the time but I wouldn't be here without the support of people like you who are reading this right now. I honestly don't think I'd be getting by doing the work I do if it wasn't for this city and the people in it. 💕

What a Long Strange Trip it’s been!  15 years, nearly to the day of getting the keys to 21 King St N, the vacant space that would become Uptown 21, I find myself on the outside looking in.  I am moving on from Fat Sparrow. Last week, we finalized a deal to sell, and Friday was my last shift. Appropriately, I spent it frying up smash burgers for our revived version of #brownbagfriday    I have many emotions about stepping away from the world that we’ve created, from the ground up, but mostly, I am happy and content. We accomplished a lot, sacrificed more, and left everything we could on the table, literally. To say that the experience I’ve had over the last 15 years has changed me would be a massive understatement. It’s a large part of who I am, and it’s scary to imagine what that means now. But I am confident that the skills, knowledge, and relationships formed will serve me well as I consider my next steps.  To everyone who helped us over the years, THANK YOU! The babysitters, the customers, the crew, the crew oh man the staff we’d know as family, the farmers, the makers, delivery drivers, industry peers, repair techs, bankers, BIA’s, press, sales reps and suppliers, chef’s I’ve worked with or simply admired from afar and our family. Lastly, our children, who were born into the circus, adapted to the lifestyle and eventually worked at our side, so proud. You have all meant so much to us, and we are eternally grateful for your contributions, big or small!     I could go on, but I won’t. I think that's best for a future podcast or a bar stool, so buy me a drink sometime and I’ll tell you a story or two.  In the meantime, stay well fed, I’ll be enjoying a break and a rebuild of myself as I reflect on the ups and downs and consider the scars and the strengths the last 15 years has left on me and those I love.  Later Food Lovers 🤟

  2. Long sweet post warning! It’s a long overdue post, put off because I struggled with it. The extra time gave me a wider perspective, I’m grateful.  It would have read “today I’ve lost my rock, my partner in crime, my restaurant ride or die, the brains & beauty to my dancing clown persona, my partner. After 25 years working side by side, shaping a business together, @natnotorious made a brave decision to move on from @fatsparrowgroup & hospitality altogether. I’d be lying to say I wasn’t scared shitless. Nat has been by my side, pulling the lion's share of the weight since before day one. I can’t overstate her impact on me & the professional I try to be. While I am excited for & equally proud of Nat for what she has done for me, Fat Sparrow & the local industry through the four walls of our restaurants & her time spent teaching @conestogacollege, selfishly I feel a little lost. Any time I’ve needed her she’s been a “NaaaaaaaaaaaT” away, always bringing me back to earth.”  I’d have gone on to say the industry lost a leader, a maverick & warrior, for those who think words like “warrior” are hyperbole, you’ve obviously not worked in hospitality, because it takes a warrior to have that kind of success, especially as a woman. We opened @nnutown21 in 2008, 2nd daughter just 6 weeks old. That restaurant changed everything & became Fat Sparrow, our kids are incredible, our family life vibrant & healthy, Nat’s a goddammed warrior.    Now, 2 months in working without Nat I realise I underestimated her. I do miss her at work, but that's a me thing. The team she fostered, mentored & left behind to support me in leading Fat Sparrow is incredibly strong, dedicated, precise & passionate! These folks had that moxy themselves, but Nat saw it in them, nurtured them & found ways to push them even higher. In her absence, they slay.  Nat, I love you & miss having you at my side 24/7, we made that work & I’ll never take it for granted, but be oh so proud of your legacy, we all are. Restaurant Industry, you’re a beast, grinding champions like water does rock. Wherever Nat lands next, I hope you appreciate how lucky you are to gain such a world beater!
