  1. Not just a sad week for music fans—but for an entire era of pop culture. Ozzy wasn’t just the godfather of heavy metal, he was this chaotic, oddly endearing thread that somehow stitched together MTV, family dysfunction, gothic weirdness, and actual sincerity. And through it all—he actually seemed like a really decent guy. I came across this old video of him being gifted a custom chopper by the crew at Count’s Kustoms, and man… you could see the gratitude on his face. He looked like a kid on Christmas. Not for the cameras. Just… genuinely moved. The bike itself is a work of art—built in the early years of Count’s Kustoms by Danny “The Count” Koker, Shannon Aikau, Ryan Evans and the team. Up front, it runs a massive Sugar Bear springer front end that practically touches the horizon. The gas tank’s shaped like a gothic cross, draped in red spider webs and hand-lettered in gold “OZZY”, with a finish that looks like it was summoned from a Sabbath album cover. Out back, the rear fender pays tribute to Randy Rhoads, complete with his iconic polka-dot Flying V guitar immortalized in paint. The solo seat is real alligator hide, the paint is black and crimson, and the Gothic murals are pure Evans—cathedrals, skulls, and crucifixes woven together in a rolling sermon of leather, loss, and legacy. It’s still on display at the shop in Vegas. Worth the trip if you’re ever there. Because some bikes are more than bikes. They’re stories. And this one tells the tale of a man who was more thoughtful than anyone gave him credit for. Ride on, Ozzy

  2. We’ve all had stories of people that took up riding late and feel great, or folks that ride their motorcycle s well into their later years and “are still sharp as a tack” Well, there’s actual science backing that up now. Dr. Ryuta Kawashima — He’s a neuroscientist from Tohoku University in Japan — and ran a fascinating controlled study with a group of middle-aged riders aged 40–50 who all had licenses but hadn’t ridden in years. He split them into two groups: one got back on their bikes and commuted daily for two months (about 112 minutes a day, five days a week), the other stayed off the saddle. The researchers didn’t just hand out surveys — they ran proper neuropsychological testing (visuospatial cognition, working memory, executive function) and even used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to see what was lighting up in their brains. Quantitatively, the riders showed significant improvement in visuospatial cognition, with smaller but still measurable gains in working memory and executive function. Qualitatively, riders reported feeling more focused, less stressed, and more “mentally awake” in their day-to-day lives. One of the most interesting findings? Increased activation in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex — the bit of the brain that deals with decision-making, planning, and juggling multiple inputs at speed. Riding seemed to recruit and exercise those networks in a way driving simply didn’t. Bottom line: getting back on the bike in midlife isn’t just good for the soul — it’s a legitimate cognitive workout. If you want to dig into the full study, you can find it in the JSAE International Journal of Automotive Engineering under the title “Effects of Daily Motorcycle Riding on Cognitive Functions and Brain Structures in Middle-Aged Motorcyclists.” Keep this one handy for when someone tells you you’re getting too old to ride.. it’s actually keeping you young!

  3. As we age, the more adventures we need to take to keep our minds sharp and our spirits high. Motorcycle road trips, often thought of as pure fun, actually offer impressive mental and physical benefits, especially for older adults. Riding a motorcycle requires keen focus, decision-making, and quick reflexes, which engage the brain’s prefrontal cortex. This level of mental stimulation has been linked to cognitive health and dementia prevention, as shown in Kawashima’s research at Tohoku University. The thrill of the ride also boosts dopamine levels, with research in the Journal of Positive Psychology suggesting that new, exciting activities help lift mood and counter depression or anxiety, common challenges in later years. Physically, motorcycling strengthens core muscles, balance, and coordination, contributing to long-term physical fitness. The American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that moderate physical activities can reduce disability risks in older adults, making motorcycling an unexpected ally in healthy aging. Furthermore, the act of riding induces a meditative ‘flow’ state that reduces stress by lowering cortisol levels, as reported in the journal Mindfulness. Add in the social bonds built along the way—interactions with fellow riders or locals on the road—and you have an adventure that supports mental, physical, and social well-being: a formula for a happier, healthier life. That’s the heart of Spark Unplugged—a program I’m launching to help people reconnect with themselves, their passions, and their mental well-being through tools, practices, and community. If you’re curious, DM me “Spark” to join the waitlist and be part of the first group to ride this journey with me.
