  1. 🧠 𝐏𝐑𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐄 𝐌𝐀𝐊𝐄𝐒 𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐌𝐀𝐍𝐄𝐍𝐓 ⁣ Any athlete who has trained with me knows that I am a little fanatical about using proper technique/mechanics on our exercises…even the boring and seemingly less important warmup ones. ⁣ ⁣ As a young athlete myself I always subscribed to the notion that “practice makes perfect.” I worked extremely hard and always “got my reps in” whether I wanted to or not and even if I just banged them out mindlessly to make sure I ticked that “hard work” box ✅⁣ ⁣ When I began to study motor learning & Neurocognitive development I quickly learned that practice does NOT actually make perfect but practice does makes permanent. ⁣ ⁣ Keyboard warriors can go ahead and argue about the exact number of reps 🤦🏻‍♂️ but please focus on the concept here…⁣ ⁣ In his studies on motor pattern development and disruption, motor learning expert Richard Schmidt observed that the acquisition of a new motor pattern in a closed-motor skill generally required between 300-500 repetitions to induce neuro-plastic changes in the brain. ⁣ ⁣ Conversely, correcting a faulty movement pattern that has become ingrained can require between 3,000-5,000 reps to change!!⁣ ⁣ Coaching new athletes (and particularly young athletes) is an upfront investment of time with a big potential long term payoff… if you do it right. ⁣ ⁣ As a coach you should want your athletes to do it right for their sake…but if that’s not motivation enough for you then at least do it selfishly so that it doesn’t take you 10x as long to change those bad habits once that pattern is ingrained. ⁣ If it is worth doing, it is worth doing well! ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ 𝐀.𝐁.𝐂. - 𝐀𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐁𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 👊🏻

  2. 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐎𝐒 𝐈𝐒 𝐅𝐔𝐍! ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ So much of what we do in the weight room is controlled, linear/uniplanar…and for good reason! It allows us to apply a greater and more controlled stimulus to the muscle and keeps us safe when handling heavy loads…but that in and of itself is not enough to prepare elite team-sport athletes. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Dancing through ladders and touching stationary pylons can definitely have a place in training as a reliable warmup tool, a rehab/prehab progression step or as basic general conditioning but REAL agility for sport requires;⁣⁣ reaction, mobility, balance, coordination, adaptability, visual tracking, spatial and body awareness ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ This is a little glimpse into one of the ways that we develop these qualities away from the actual sport itself. Like all of our training we will gradually progress this work to add more movement, greater speeds and greater challenges to overcome as we move along through the off season. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ This is also a great opportunity to highlight the work of my great friend and colleague Andre Talbot from @spiritloft a true movement guru! 23 years ago we were bitter rivals on the football field (well, actually I was the only one who was bitter as I spent most of the game chasing him around unsuccessfully)…then I had the honour of coaching him during his successful CFL career…then he became a full time coach here in our program until he found his true calling and opened up his amazing facility @spiritloft. Now he is a trusted resource and it fills me with joy to be able to collaborate together and provide these athletes with cool movement learning opportunities like this! ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Moving and adapting through chaos and finding a way to have fun while you’re working through it… good for sports and for life!

  3. Shooting pre-game will never cease to be my favourite time to capture moments as a sports cinematographer 🎥⚡️ 3 Tips for Capturing FIRE B-Roll during Pre-Game: 1. Familiarize yourself with the team’s routines ahead of the game - where they enter the arena from, what end they warm up in, what order the players come out in. These all can seem like VERY basic things to know, but the more familiar you are with them, the more efficiently you’ll be able to shoot these moments. 2. Shoot in 60 FPS - even though I’ve personally gotten away from slow motion in recent months, I LOVE shooting pre-game content in 60 frames. Most people would say shoot at 120 FPS, but I personally think that’s way too slow for these types of shots. 60 frames slowed down 40% is something we don’t see enough of, and it gives a dreamy energy that we don’t get as much with 120. 3. Look for EMOTION - this is the best time to capture athletes up close and personal, so take advantage of it to capture the energy in your environment. Whether it’s a close up of a player getting in the zone, or a wide shot of the arena bumping with energy, make sure your pre-game shots CONVEY emotion, because that’s what’ll make them 1000x more impactful for your viewer. • Shot for the NHL. 2. A dream come true. 2025 ⏩ 2019. When I was eight years old (after two years of being dragged to the rink kicking and screaming), I finally fell in love with hockey. Like a lot of Canadian kids, it became my dream to make the @NHL. As I got older, that dream turned into a mission. Eventually, reality hit: my hands of stone weren’t gonna cut it in the show. But I promised myself I’d find another way in. Around that time, I became obsessed with the other side of the game: the storytelling, the broadcasts, the pre-game hype reels that made you feel something before Hockey Night in Canada. I was hooked. Since then, it’s been a long road—one that’s taken me across North America. A journey full of wins, losses, auditions, rejections, heartbreaks, and detours. But I never quit. And now, it all makes sense. I’m beyond proud to announce that I’m joining @Canucks Sports & Entertainment as Director of Content & Social—my first full-time role in the National Hockey League. This one’s personal. In 2019/20, I had the privilege of working as the in-arena host for the Vancouver Canucks, for an incredibly special 50th anniversary season. This was the team that gave me my first shot after years of knocking on the door. I always felt like the road would bring me back here—and I’m so grateful that it has. #Vancouver is a world-class city, and the Canucks are a world-class organization, always striving to be the best. I’ve been around the league, and with all bias aside—I can say it: nobody does it better. Now I get to tell stories for the team that’s become my favourite, alongside the @americanhockeyleague’s reigning champion @abbotsfordcanucks, the future @NLL champion @vanwarriors, and the @surgevancouver of the Call of Duty League. It’s time to head home and get to work.
See you in September, Vancouver ❤️
