  2. Nobody talks about how difficult it can be mentally when you gain back weight after you’re sick. This is a journey I’ve been on for 2 years and I feel like I’m just now coming to understand it. And it’s difficult. • When I was at my sickest with my chronic illness I was extremely skinny. I wasn’t eating because I was so nauseous all the time and when I did I either pooped it out or threw it up right away and didn’t absorb any nutrients anyways. I had no muscle because I was too weak to exercise. And yet, despite being deathly ill, people still commented on how skinny I was as if it were a compliment. • Flash forward to now. I am healthy, my body can absorb nutrients, I can enjoy the foods I want. I exercise daily and I have energy to complete tasks. • In this time I’ve gone from a size 6 to a size 10 at lululemon, and half the clothes in my closet don’t fit me. And it bothers me that I identify this as a problem some days. Gaining weight IS NOT A BAD THING. In fact- it was literally necessary for me to gain weight in order to stay alive. Regardless, society often manipulates us to viewing weight gain as a negative. I admit that recently I’ve felt as though I have gained so much weight - and I mean I have- but I NEED THE WEIGHT. It’s muscle, it’s fat that allows me to complete daily tasks. So I’m actively working to shift my mindset because I don’t think weight gain after major illness is talked about enough- if at all. I’m lucky to be healthy and I love my body so much and all the things that it allows me to do 💙💙💙💙 • • • • #crohns #crohnsdisease #colitis #crohnsandcolitis #ostomy #ibd #colon #stoma #chronicillness #chronicpainwarrior #chronicfatigue #ileostomy #disabled #disabilityawareness #invisibleillnessawareness

  1. 1 year.....⁣ ⁣ 1 year since active treatment ⁣ 1 year of hair growth ⁣ 1 year of navigating life after cancer ⁣ 2018 was awful. BRCA diagnosis, cancer diagnosis, double mastectomy, chemo. ⁣ ⁣ I thought 2019 would be my year. Cancer was done. It was over! But I’m realizing it’s never really over.⁣ 2019 was much tougher than I expected. Life after cancer is much harder than I expected (and I was forewarned). I never would have thought it would be this hard and this long trying to get back to work, trying to get back to life. ⁣ I still grieve many losses. Including the loss of my breasts. The loss of my hair. The loss of my young innocence. ⁣ I still face the impacts and implications cancer can have on my life, my hopes, my dreams, and my future. ⁣ ⁣ I see many survivors acknowledging how cancer has had positive impacts on their life. I’ve been trying to find the positive in my own story, and to be honest guys, I’m struggling. I’m also trying to decide if I HAVE to search for the positives. I feel like I’m letting life down if I don’t. Maybe my day will come. ⁣ ⁣ For now, I am grateful to be a year away from the nightmare. Grateful that I still love and find so much fulfillment in my job, and grateful that I’m slowly returning to it. I’m grateful for the things I CAN do, and will do. I’m grateful for the love and support of wonderful people in my life. I’m grateful I get to share my story, and I’m grateful if it inspires or helps even one person along their own journey. ⁣ ⁣ Bring on 2020 🥂 #cancer #breastcancer #survivor #thriver #brca #brca1 #doublemastectomy #mastectomy #reconstruction #chemohair #chemocurls #chemo #cancersurvivor #cancerthriver #lifeaftercancer #movingon #oneyearago #ygk #ygkhsc #myygk #mykhsc #kingston #kingstonontario #breasties #chemoversary @the_breasties #boobless #foobs #tnbc #tnbcsurvivor #triplenegative

  2. Work⁣ Pre vs Post Cancer⁣ I just have shorter hair, right? ⁣ . . . Two weeks ago I started my return to work. My last worked day ended up being the day of my diagnosis. I worked a night shift June 20, 2018. I stayed up afterwards to call my doctors office to see if they had results. I couldn’t sleep. At 10:30 I got the callback. And I didn’t go back to work. I couldn’t. ⁣ ⁣ Almost 17 long, excruciating, terrifying, awful, painful months later, I was ready to return to work. ⁣ ⁣ I feared this transition for many reasons. It’s been so long since I worked, would I remember how? My chemo brain had me feeling incompetent. Would going back to the hospital be too traumatic? Triggering? (I work at the hospital where I had all my treatment). Did I have enough care and empathy to give to my deserving little patients. Could I be there for them, for their families, after spending so long being there for myself. Could I physically, mentally, and emotionally handle it? I sure hoped so. I want to get back to work. I love my job. And I missed it. I missed my coworkers. I missed my life. I’m looking for normalcy again, for my “new normal”. For my life AFTER cancer. ⁣ ⁣ It’s been hard, exhausting, but I’m keeping my chin up and I’m going to succeed. ⁣ ⁣ I also want to acknowledge how WEIRD going back to work is. It was as if I hit pause, went away and had the worst time of my life, came back and hit play, and it’s kinda like nothing changed. It’s the one aspect of my life where NOTHING (significantly) changed. It’s surreal, it’s strange, but hopefully it’s good at the same time. Almost like a safe space, where I can just go and be a nurse, the same way I did before, and cancer didn’t change that (except perhaps enhance the ways I can connect with my patients). 🤞🏻⁣ ⁣ #registerednurse #RN #newnormal #lifeaftercancer #myKHSC #breastcancer #breastcancerawareness #brca #brca1 #cancercentreofsoutheasternontario #kingston #kingstonist #ygkhsc #ygk #kingstoncommunity #kingston_on #kingstonontario #universityhospital #fromnursetopatient #fromnursetopatientandback #kingstoncanada #kgh #hdh #hoteldieu #breasties @the_breasties #bestiesforbreasties #breastcanceractionkingston #ygklove

  3. 1 year separates these photos. It’s my cancerversary. One year ago, I received my breast cancer diagnosis. I was hoping to eloquently describe this day, but in honesty, I don’t know how I feel about it. I didn’t know if I wanted to acknowledge it, celebrate it, ignore it, hate it, or anything else. I woke up feeling very anxious, and sought out distraction for most of the day. Funny enough, I ventured to the hospital, to the chemo ward, to congratulate a fellow warrior as she completed chemo and rang the bell. What a year it has been. It still feels surreal, I still have trouble believing all that I went through. I have trouble digesting all I went through, and how it will impact the rest of my life. Fittingly described like a tornado, a shit-storm ripped through my life, fast and furious, and I’m still cleaning up the debris. Physically, I continue to improve. Strength, energy, endurance, it’s all coming back to me. For that, I’m grateful. Mentally, it’s still exhausting. Not to mention chemo brain 🙄🤯 I was meant to discuss returning to work with my oncologist last week. Instead we talked about the lump I found. It sent me absolutely spinning. I’ve since had an ultrasound, suggesting scar tissue, but am awaiting an MRI. When does it end? The answer is never. While I’m confident it will improve, canceritis is in full force and I live in fear daily. We’ve decided I will start talking with social work/ and or a counsellor to navigate moving on. I should have done this long ago, but fierce independent Sarah thinks she can handle it all. But I was pushed to my limits, to climb a mountain I never thought I could. I had to find strength I didn’t know I had within me. Anyways, I’m excited for summer! I’m excited to feel good, have fun, and tend to my mental health. I look forward to transitioning to some routine and normalcy when I’m ready to return to work. Gosh, I miss my tiny patients! 👶🏼 *I may edit this later, but for now, these are how my thoughts collected on this #cancerversary of mine 🤘🏻 #brca #cancer #breastcancer #recovery #mentalhealth #chemo #chemocurls #brca1 #breasties @the_breasties #breastcancerawareness #breastcancersurvivor #warrior #fighter
