  2. Friends, My newest record and heaviest effort to date, 'Everywhere I Used To Be' is out on @birthdaycakerecords now. I've been striving for the words to explain what this group of songs means to me, from their inception to the studio recordings. I spent long hours with them, wrestling with being seen this way. I laughed at self-fulfilling satire and poked fun at the lines of country music I've gotten comfortable playing with throughout my career. In a genre sometimes marred by its unwillingness to push for change, my intention with making a synth/pop-country record was definitely pointed. I wanted to blur the old and new, to paint with the colours I had blended over years of learning to become a songwriter, and more than that, a music fan. I am indebted to @marcuspaquin for his belief in these tunes, and the entire recording team for their unwavering energy in the sessions. Big thanks to my new buddies and label mates at @birthdaycakerecords - @stuupidstu, @binkypinder, @dree_davis, @thebroslandreth and my mgr @bexszymkow. ♥️ 🧠🎤🎹🎧: @marcuspaquin 💻🎙: @dimestoremedicine Assist. 💻🎙 : @ecinnamon_ 🎸: @champagnejamesrobertson ⬇️ 🎸: Tyson Maiko 🥁: @ohneel Percussion: @marcuspaquin 😭😭 table: @skinnydyck * a monstrous solo artist in his own right, check him out right now! 🎹: Geoff Hillhorst / @ghill53 🎤: @jesseannedoll 💻🎨👕: @thedankpit 📸: @unfoldingcreativephoto 📷: @heathersaitz *Special thanks to Graham Lessard and the @nmc_canada team for their hospitality* We acknowledge the generous support of this project from @projectwildab , @afa.1991 , @canada.council and the countless venues, festivals and gigs that continue to have us back to play live. 1. Didn’t go as expected. The day after a competition this is the theme of pretty much every competitor. So much planning and preparation go into every routine and in a flash, it’s over. For me, I knew this could easily not be my year. I’ve been in finals a number of times and I know how hard it is to win. What WAS unexpected and completely overwhelming was finding out how many people across the world care for me and love me. Competitors, producers, volunteers, and everyone in between came up throughout the entire event to wish me well and share their support for me. Even in my finals debrief, when I received some low scores, it was with a kindness and gentleness that completely shocked me (I can confirm that the judges have hearts and they are big ones haha). The dreams I’ve had for myself other people have also carried in their hearts without me even knowing. It sounds cheesy, but I have chased success and innovation in competition for so long that I didn’t know how good being loved would feel. I am incredibly proud of my routine. I believe that I shared an important message and I was excited to demonstrate a new technique. I can earnestly say that there are too many people to thank (if you are reading this you are probably one of them), but there are some I cannot miss. @jillhoff for being the most selfless and talented coach and a great ambassador for coffee. @tarakarinput, Malcolm and Rosie for always supporting me and traveling 42 hours to watch a coffee competition. @karineabduljabbar @jenlitzenberger For always supporting me and believing in me. @wilfordl @wlamastus @lamastusfamilyestates @simibenz @veliaines01 you are my family @monteverdefinca thank you for the amazing coffee and the constant support @jeromerosler you were amazing all week @torodeo @crosbyandcoffee and @coffeewithply team Canada was small this year but mighty :) Everyone at @monogramco for supporting me and allowing me to compete over and over. @worldcoffeechampionships and @sca_canada thanks for making this possible. Massive, massive congrats to @anthony_jdouglas and all the other competitors.

  2. Five years. It has been almost five years since I won a barista championship. I am thankful for my time away as I was able to relax more and help in other areas of competition, but I was very nervous and unsure of myself coming back. The industry is always growing and evolving and it’s hard to keep up. Thanks to my coach, @jillhoff, for constantly pushing the courses and the concept to its absolute best. Jill was the outgoing champion and she should be extremely proud of how she has represented specialty coffee and I know she will continue to be an inspiration for many. @lamastusfamilyestates for always cheering me on and supporting me with amazing coffees. They are my Panamanian family @forestgreencoffee provided me with the Koji Java in my milk course. It was the perfect coffee for my concept. Everyone at @monogramco for the constant support. Many people have picked up my slack during my practice and competition times. @tarakarinput, Malcolm, and Rosie. It’s an added level of difficulty having two kids while competing, but Tara has been amazing in supporting me while I compete (and is always supportive and believes in me). Malcolm watched the announcements and it sounds like he was as nervous as me! @sca_canada @beanstockfest and @_mountaincoffee did an amazing job organizing the competition and making it feel like one big celebration of coffee. Huge thanks to @sanremocanada @fwdcoffee @urnexbrands @waterforcoffee.ca and @eightouncecoffee for supporting the competitions. Finally, congrats to all the other competitors. It was an amazing field of baristas and I am so excited to see Canada continue to grow and develop. I am so happy and excited to represent Canada at the WBC and WBrC!

  3. This weekend I competed at the 2023 Canadian Barista Championship and was fortunate enough to win. It takes a talented team to be successful in competitions, but there is another quality that has been a game changer for me: People believing in you. Even when I waver, the people that believe in me never falter. Win or lose, there are so many people to thank for getting me here. @jillhoff thank you for your attention to detail in everything! Not many people can coach and advise in every aspect of comp, but you can. I think you slept about 6 hours the entire weekend so maybe grab a nap this week ;) Couldn’t do it without you. @tarakarinput, Malcolm, and Rosie. Thanks for always supporting me and giving up so many weekends for competitions. @lamastusfamilyestates @wilfordl @wlamastus The best family with amazing coffees. I am so thankful to count you as family. @monogramco @justineyford @ohymerej and everyone at Monogram support me constantly and give me the bandwidth to be able to practice and compete. Huge thank you to @sca_canada @joshhockin @strumpfm @cliff_hansen @philandseb and all the other organizers and volunteers. The event was seamless! @commonlycoffee MC’ed like a PRO @wesfarnell and @jenfarnell you always go above and beyond supporting the industry. Canadian competitions would not be the same without you. @stronghold_roasters @urnexbrands your tools are incredible, but your support is the 🍒 on top. Thanks to all the sponsors! @eightouncecoffee @sanremocanada @waterforcoffee.ca @hario_official @fwdcoffee @acaiacoffee @oatly @supergood.coffee @ecm_espressoyyc Your support does not go unnoticed. Canada appreciates everything you are helping us build! Congrats to all the competitors this weekend. The level is getting higher and higher and there are amazing baristas across the whole country. Canada never stops improving and I think this is just the beginning. @jair_grd @kat_dziwenka @sxfcoffee @stillsura @celestefiallos @justanothercoffeegram @coffeewithconor @_mr.lopez_ @papr_1k @thatfellownello @coffeewithply 📷: @aprilwilcocks @jillhoff @_cjtz

  1. I see so many talented ‘blonding specialists’ online but rarely come across ‘brunette specialists.’ As much as a love creating soft, seamless blondes - there’s just something about a rich brunette that sparks joy for me. Here are a few tips I use to create the perfect shiny brunette and why - 1. I don’t ever reach for a developer higher than 10Vol. This is KEY to creating a soft, natural brunette. Using 10 vol helps prevent over-lifting and protect hairs integrity. Using a higher developer can sometimes lighten the hair too much pushing to the blonde range which is not necessary for creating a soft brunette. 2. I don’t lift higher than a level 6 as I want to maintain the richness of the brunette family. Lifting past a level 6 pushes the color too light entering that blonde/golden range, avoiding this helps prevent lighting to any unwanted warmth or brassiness 3. Sometimes I apply the all over gloss before rootmeling. If there happens to be too much contrast between the lift and the guests natural color, I’ll opt for this option to utilize the end tone for not only a beautiful result but to act as a “filler” to avoid any dull or muddy tones when brushing through the root melt 4. I always tone one level darker than the desired end result. This helps with longevity, as hair color fades over time, toning slightly darker ensures that as the color fades, it won’t turn brassy or wash out too quickly. This helps maintain depth and richness for longer #yycbrunette #brunettebalayage #richbrunette #haireducation
