  1. 2 months ago today, my life changed in an instant. A car hit me on my bike. That day led to surgery, a long fight to save my big toe on my left foot, and eventually an amputation on June 21. From crutches to relearning how to walk, to months of pain, swelling, and therapy… there have been so many days where even standing felt impossible. And today, exactly 2 months later, I’m starting to get back on two wheels. It’s not easy yet. Shifting up still hurts about 60% of the time, I miss about 10% of my shifts, and the other 30% go smoothly. For now, these will be short rides, just enough to rebuild my strength and my confidence. But the feeling of being back out there? It’s unreal. Riding has always been one of the most powerful outlets for my mental health. There’s something about getting on the bike that strips away all the noise and distractions of life. For a little while, it’s just me, the bike, and the road…nothing else matters except the simple joy of being out there. Today I felt a piece of myself come back that I’ve been missing since that moment. Here’s to progress, to healing, to refusing to stay down, and to finding yourself again in the places you thought you lost. There’s still so much more progress to be made. I still can’t walk properly, I’m still navigating a concussion and still very much not the same as I was, but I’m getting there, and this feels like a huge piece of getting my life back. I am so grateful to everyone who’s been in my corner. There’s a ton of recovery still to go, but I am beyond thankful that this day has come.

  2. This afternoon I got a call from Mariko saying she had been in an accident just 5 minutes from our house. I had no idea how bad it was, only that she was hit hard from behind and was going to call 911. I rode there immediately to be with her. The other driver hit her from behind doing 70-80km/h and completely destroyed the back of our SUV, and the impact was so bad that our spare tire was knocked off. The front of the other SUV is demolished, with fluids leaking everywhere and air bags deployed. Mariko has been to the hospital and unquestionably has whiplash, with lots of pain in her neck, back, and ribs, and bruising on her knee, but she doesn’t have any broken bones or cuts and will be okay. The other driver also went to the hospital and seems to be okay too. For now it’s going to be rest and recovery for Mariko, and more insurance claim work for us, but we’re so thankful she’s okay and that the kids weren’t in the car. Hug your loved ones often and tell them you love them; you just never know what life can throw at you. ❤️

I was able to make it there before the paramedics and the fire trucks, and be the first person she saw at her window. Although it was traumatic to pull up to the scene of an accident involving my wife, it was comforting to us to have each other in that moment. I am so grateful I had the phone nearly. I can’t imagine the guilt I would have felt if I had missed that call, and now I feel extra paranoid about leaving the house, or even the room, without it. The other driver had hit her from behind doing 70-80km/h and completely destroyed the back of our SUV, writing it off. Mariko has spent the last 3.5 months recovering from the whiplash with lots of pain in her neck, back, and ribs, and working to recover from the PTSD. Hug your loved ones often and tell them you love them; you just never know what life can throw at you. ❤️
