Self-screening is so important, I continue to check in on breast health following some large lumps that were biopsied and NOT detecting breast cancer at the time - but that doesn’t mean it won’t turn into something in the future which is why regular self-screening and mammograms are important to catch any changes early. IMPORTANTLY there are too many women in my world that have experienced Breast Cancer diagnosis & treatments, double mastectomies following BRCA detection through genetic testing and the emotional and physical journey of going through the stages of cancer head on. There are no words to accurately weight the impact of any type of cancer on a loved one or individual. I am inspired by @bethmmarchant for the recent campaign with @densebreastscanada #nottooyoung. This photo essay examines the issue of breast cancer in women who are believed to be “too young” for the disease and “too young” to be screened. Every woman in this series had to fight against the belief they were too young, fight for attention from their doctors, fight for diagnostic testing, and it turns out, were fighting for their lives. Dense Breasts Canada is honoured to collaborate with award-winning photographer Hilary Gauld to present NOT TOO YOUNG. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an international health campaign that aims to promote screening and prevention of the disease, which affects 2.3 million women worldwide. Known best for its pink theme color, the month features a number of campaigns and programs — conducted by groups ranging from breast cancer advocacy organizations to local community organizations to major retailers — aimed at: 🩷supporting people diagnosed with breast cancer, including those with metastatic breast cancer 🩷educating people about breast cancer risk factors encouraging women to go for regular breast cancer screening starting at age 40 or EARLIER , depending on personal breast cancer risk 🩷fundraising for breast cancer research Please, this month, do what you can: screen, listen, donate, advocate, support and fight.
