  1. Dang, this short random video clip went hella viral. I’ve turned comments off because it was getting exhausting, but at least everyone was nice! The original caption spoke to the way IG and social media is changing lately: I’ve stopped caring about reaching my followers because that’s not how social media works anymore, and I never stop soaking up information and discourse about how things are changing regarding the way people use social media platforms. Have you come across the term “enshittification” in your virtual travels lately (also referred to as “platform decay”)? These are terms that were used in a Medium article posted by writer Cory Doctorow back at the end of 2022 titled “Social Quitting” in which he wrote, “Here is how platforms die: first, they are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. Then, they die. I call this enshittification, and it is a seemingly inevitable consequence arising from the combination of the ease of changing how a platform allocates value, combined with the nature of a “two sided market”, where a platform sits between buyers and sellers, hold each hostage to the other, raking off an ever-larger share of the value that passes between them.” There is another conversation happening right now based around the topic of “The Death of the Follower” that is directly connected to the enshittification of social media. If you’re an artist or creative of any kind on social media who’s been feeling the effects of enshittification, I highly suggest listening to Patreon founder Jack Conte’s recent SXSW keynote speech titled “Death of the Follower & the Future of Creativity on the Web”. You can find it on YouTube. I’d love to leave Instagram, and what’s happening runs so much deeper than most people realize. However, I can’t & won’t leave just yet because I’m both contractually obliged to stay for the rest of the year and I actually do use it a lot for stories and DM’s. That’s literally it, though. The figures become 𝙥𝙨𝙚𝙪𝙙𝙤𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙥𝙝𝙨, embodying and enacting gestures familiar within ourselves, as they appear in the processes of coming together and coming apart. Re-working, and repair, become tenets to self-actualization and empowerment that celebrates expansive and nuanced experiences. Prioritizing mental health when considering self-care in relation to motherwork has created deep and nuanced avenues to explore. This figure reflects a consideration towards the nervous system (polyvagal theory), coral growths, and marine animals in particular the iron snail (scaly-foot gastropod) . These snails thrive in the deepest parts and most challenging parts of the ocean, alongside hydrothermal vents (deep sea volcanoes) and whose bodies are completely covered in iron (plates on their soft bodies, and iron on their shells) not merely external coatings, but derived from a symbiotic partnership with the bacteria living within their bodies, who process the chemicals from the vents into food for the snails, and thus create metallic waste channeled through the bodies and deposited as scales. The figure holds one in each hand, as they make their way up the form, balancing on one leg. The labyrinth growths, change in color as they make their way to the head, where they are closest to the sun, and are bleached (a negative effect of climate change) and detrimental to ocean survival. HAZEL MAE: 7 days old #notadoptable As a biologist, I knew I would fall madly in love with this tiny human, but as a childless, rational thinker, it was impossible to preconceive the madness. #madlyinlove Notes from our very important meeting: On the way to the hospital, we dropped Pop (#adoptable) off at a way nicer, nearby homeless camp with Miho (always lovingly referred to as our “foster fairy godmother”, but really our fairy godmother, too). Docs were concerned about letting Hazel stay inside too long due to my geriatric status. But because she was so rowdy in there and we had none of the risk factors that sometimes come with later pregnancy, we delayed intervening in her gestation as long as the doctors felt comfortable with. That day came last Saturday. We went to the hospital expecting a nudged journey towards labour over hours or days, but instead ended up meeting Hazel in the early afternoon via caesarean. As soon as we decided with our doc that caesarean was the best route for Hazel (wasn’t plan A or plan B or even plan C), the wheels of the delivery truck got moving quick. A dream team of on-call docs and nurses came in on that beautiful fresh snow day to orchestrate our very important meeting with Hazel. Beautiful, robust, and exceeding all expectations, Hazel made her air-breathing debut under the bright lights of the operating room surrounded by loving humans and hearing Mike’s perfect welcome playlist. She got an Apgar score of nine and was placed immediately on my chest on the operating table with Mike steadying both of us. While Hazel handled surgery like a champ, I came out with a minor nerve complication that kept us in hospital until my organs and my brain got back on speaking terms. Then we went home for recovery/rehab (and at some point in the probably distant future: rest). While we were off galavanting around Canmore Hospital, Anna was holding down the fort at home. She found herself invited on daily adventures with Miho and Pop; an eye-opener, probably, on how a five star camp runs friendly and welcoming camp activities. Welcome to the world, little buddy.
